I assume we're talking modern Christmas songs, not traditional carols.

Obviously Bing's "White Christmas" and Cole's "Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting)" are classic, the one that always really gets me is "Christmastime Is Here."

Where's the love for pre-crack Whitney Houston's "DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR!!!!!"
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

re: The greatest Christmas song ever?

I always imagine I like Christmas Time is Here until I actually listen to it. It sounds sort of funereal and dirge-like to me. And in the actual Charlie Brown Christmas Special, during the song, Charlie Brown is all depressed and talking about how he's so unhappy amidst what should be the cheerful season. It's such a downer.

I would also like to add John Williams' Merry Christmas and a surprising new favorite, Kristen Chenoweth's Do You Hear What I Hear?

Why do we have yet to make a winter holiday for Atheists?!

And no, the Solstice doesn't count.

re: The greatest Christmas song ever?

For classical Christmas type songs- "Silver Bells".

BUT I REALLY love "Fairy Tale of New York"

"And the boys of the NYPD choir were singin' "Galway Bay"...

Good times.

Mister Matt, for me "Christmastime Is Here" perfectly captures the bittersweet quality of the holiday.

Though probably it's mostly just that I associate it with watching the TV special as a kid.

I've always loved Christmas--never been one of those "the holidays are tough" kind of people--but even as a kid I felt "A Charlie Brown Christmas" got it right.

If I had to pick just one, it would be:

Christmas Waltz sung by Karen Carpenter...
The great thing with human brains is they're fanless, nice and quiet although I'm sure mine whistles a bit sometimes.

No one has mentioned "The Most Offensive Song Ever Written" - sung by Kenny and Mr. Hanky on the South Park Christmas Album:

"You can ---- all the ---- you want
And still be a virgin... Mary!"

re: The greatest Christmas song ever?

Probably my second-favorite Christmas song is one called "A Simple Prayer", by country singer/songwriter Hal Ketchum. I posted an audio of it on TheSite. It's not at all country, so don't let that deter you from listening. It's really very lovely.

My favorite is "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Judy Garland or just about anyone else. I don't think I've ever heard a bad rendition of this song.
