They should make these kids watch the Molly Ringwald movie "For Keeps?"
DD, you make an excellent point. The person on the report stated that the U.S. has the highest rate of teen pregnancy. She said neither abstinence nor the giving out of contraception is the real answer.
I want to be careful how I couch this. In my county which has one of the lowest birthrates in the nation, the birthrate amongst teenaged young ladies within a particular community is skyrocketing.
More of the same

Interesting, javero.
the birthrate increased 16 percent from 2002 to 2005 among all women 15 to 19
Well thank goodness they couldn't have seen JUNO back then, or it might have been worse!

Ha!
"They're so excited to finally have someone to love them unconditionally,"
Ha!
Wait until those children are teenagers.
If someone wants unconditional love, get a puppy.
I agree with what's been said. The availability, or lack thereof, of contraceptives would have made no difference at all. These girls were pretty determined.
They were actually talking about this on the radio this morning, blaming it on Nickelodeon for not canning Jamie Lynn Spears' show after she got pregnant.
When it comes down to it, you can't blame this kind of singular phenomenon on just one factor.
Are the families of these girls to blame? Yes, at least partially.
But this is an entire group of girls who went out and proactively got pregnant.
Our society, from what I've noticed, has a tendency to both glamorize pregnancy in many different aspects. Can you blame this all on one movie? No, particularly because the group actually conceived their children before the film in question was released. But when you look at pop culture in general - from the recent influx of baby movies like Knocked Up and Baby Mama, to the amount of attention lavished on starlets and socialites who've popped out kids in the past few years, you have to wonder if maybe, just maybe, this aspect of American society may have played a small role in this.
I know a girl who opted out of an abortion when she was 15 because she wanted to have the child for the same reason these girls did: to have someone to love her "unconditionally,"to compensate for her own tumultous family life. Within six months of the birth, she had put the child up for adoption - she realized that it had been a mistake and just couldn't take it. Perhaps these kids will come around to the same realization.
I thought Juno gave a very realistic look at teen pregnancy. She went through all the crap without it being glamourized at all. She made the right choice. She gave the baby up and it wasn't easy. I don't know how a girl would see that and think it's the cool thing to do. I don't know. Maybe they think getting knocked up give you quick wit and catchy new phrases. I know they do send you a hamburger phone after you get a positive test.
Gothampc, how i love you for name dropping For Keeps! i forgot about that movie! that and Fresh Horses used to come on HBO every other day when i was growing up!
