Seventy-Six Trombones
"Did you get a call yet?" The 'yet' was added quickly; a feeble attempt by my friend Molly to cheer me up. "They'll call, I'm sure of it." Her voice indicated otherwise. I had called her because today was the day the Theater Under the Stars (TUTS) production of The Music Man was being cast, and I wanted to play Harold Hill as if it were the reason I was born. But, if you didn't get a call, you weren't even in the show. "How can you think that you won't get in? There were four guys there!" Despite her efforts, I wasn't comforted in the least.
Although I was still in the dark as to what my part was (if any), Molly certainly wasn't. She had been called by TUTS and informed she had gotten the part of Marian (the lead female). She was hooting and hollering noisily, as I sat in gloomy despair. Of course, I was happy for her, but resentment had begun to rear its ugly head.
Seventy-six trombones hit the counterpoint...
After she was finished with her failed attempt at condolence, we stayed silent for a while. We didn't dare hang up. It was almost as if we thought, Well, if I hang up now, there will be no hope left at all. During this time, I searched every link and page on the TUTS website, looking for some kind of a cast list, but there was nothing. And then the phone got disconnected. Even my phone was mocking me.
...while a hundred and ten cornets blazed away...
Quickly, I dashed into the kitchen to get the other phone. As I entered, I saw that it had become a garbage dump. Pizza boxes, broken garbage bags, bottles, and pieces of paper that cried, "973-746-9086 (tots)!" and "Call plumber 1-800-FIX-BATH!" littered the floor.
No, I never heard them at all, till there was you...
Soon, I was on the phone with Molly again. We discussed the same ideas over and over again. I was perfect for the part, the competition was weak, etc. etc. By now, I just wanted this whole ordeal to be over with, Hill or not.
Incredulously, I checked the website one more time. Right on the front page was the cast list. And the first name on the list:
**** ****...Harold Hill
The house was not quiet for several minutes after that.
It was one of the best feelings I had ever had, and I realized Molly had been right all along. We both got the amazing parts we wanted, and all that worrying was for nothing. A few minutes after we had quieted down, my brother informed me that someone had called for me while I was at school. He said that he wrote down the number, and it was in the kitchen.
He said that it was some place called 'TOTS'.
With a capital T and that rhymes with P and that stands for pool...

Now if I could only figure out why my printer won't print it...
EDIT-And it is just a rough draft, so I'm probably going to have to change some things.
