I did a search for this topic and didn't find anything, but if I overlooked something please let me know.
I'll be in NYC for six days in a little over two weeks, and I'm seeing two shows on three of the six days (catching the Thursday Phantom matinee).
What are some things you all like to do in the three or so hours between matinee and evenings shows? Dinner will obviously take some of that time, but I just thought I'd look for some recommendations of things that you guys have found to pass a little time.
Having spent countless of evenings around Times Square trying to waste time, this question is still hard to answer, but I've found it that its up to the person to decide since the choices are endless. When I need to sit down and rest (or use the bathroom), hotel lobbies are the best for that and you can just walk in and relax and nobody will bother you, some of my favorite hotel lobbies are the Marriott Marquis (on the 8th floor), Crowne Plaza, Westin, and Paramount (free Wifi!).
If you want to keep being active, I suggest walking towards Rockefeller Center and just checking out their stores underground. You can also walk up and down 5th avenue at the many stores it offers.
If you want to walk a little further (or even take the subway), you can go hang out in the NY Public Library of the Performing Arts up in Lincoln Center, where you'll find countless of books and soundtracks you can read or listen to, or even musical scores to make copies of and you don't need a library card to enter and peruse, only to take out stuff.
Also, down south on 34th st is Macy's, where you can truly spend a whole day inside and never get to see all of it! Hope you have a good time seeing the shows!
If you've not done it before, walk over to 42nd and spend a couple of hours at Madame Tussaud's wax museum. Yeah, it's a little kitschy but it's very well done and fun if you've never been in one before. Discounted tickets are usually available on Goldstar.
IMHO: Ditch the other "tourists" and carouse with the Hew Yorkers.
Pick a nabe, and then walk around, and browse and pick a tiny nabe restaurant to eat at.
I.e: Tribeca, West and East Village, Chinatown, Union Square, Zabar's, Riverdale, Central Park, etc, etc. It's endless/ There's something for whatever you like.... Check out the website "Goldstarevents.com/newyorkcity" for discounted fun stuff to do.
Take the Staten Island Ferry for FREE on the weekend only and sail back with a gorgioso view of downtown manhattan Time it with the sunset, naturally!!
SNAFU-the Drama Book Shop sounds super interesting-I'll definitely try to fit that in! blaxx-Thanks for the MOMA suggestion; I've been sort of wishy-washy on that front. Melissa25-The ICP certainly seems like a fun afternoon. FishermanBob-Good to hear about Madame Tussaud's. I had pretty much passed it off as drivel, but after your recommendation I might check it out if I have time. FindingNamo-Unfortunately, I will not be packing heat. Thanks for your coupon. HorseTears-You made me chuckle. tiny3-Yes, I would love to have a serendipitous afternoon in a true NY neighborhood. Sounds awesome.
