What are some attractions in NYC that would be good for a family of four with 18 year old son and 12 year old daughter? The catch is, we don't have a lot of time. Meeting some people, seeing 8pm performance one day and 2pm matinee the next.

Thanks!

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Walk around Times Square!

"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."

Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum on 42nd Street is fun, but a bit pricey.

The Museum of Natural History is a good family place, too.

Ice skating at Rockefeller Center.

Radio City Music Hall backstage tour; Empire State Building and Skyride; Ice skating at Rockefeller Center; Take the subway to lower Manhattan then on to the Staten Island Ferry (free!) for a nice sight of the Statue of Liberty and great skyline of the city. Weather permitting - walk or bike through Central Park to see all the statues. Hmmm - so much to do - so little time...

The museum of Radio and Television. It's in the midtown area, right near the 21 Club. Keep in mind that if you want to go to the video viweing library (where you can each choose up to 4 videos of almost anything you wish to see from tv's past and view them on a private screen) you have to book it ahead of time. It goes by a time schedule. That place has something for everyone in the family. re: re: re: re: re: Things to do in NYC same day as a show...

Well, Cap'n, didn't give much to work on but here goes.

DAY ONE
8:00 to 10:00pm Theatre
10:00 to Midnight EMPIRE STATE BUILDING Observatory (nothing quite like being up there at night)

DAY TWO
8:00 to 9:00am Breakfast, hotel
9:00 to 10:30am #1, 2, OR 3 subway (7th Ave line)to Battery Park, see the Statue of Liberty from the tip of Manhattan; stroll around Wall St.
10:30 to Noon #1,2,or3 7th Ave subway to Christopher St stop walk east 3 short blocks or so to Washington Sq. Park (the locale of THE HEIRESS), in the heart of Greenwich Village and center of the NYU campus.
NOON to 1:15pm Lunch in a small village restaurant or grab a slice of pizza and keep strolling
1:15 to 1:45pm #1,2, or 3 7th Ave subway from Christopher Street to Times Square
1:45 to 4:00PM THEATRE
4:00 take cab to Central Park, Tavern on the Green, 65TH & Central Park West, have drinks
5:30 til ? walk NE from Tavern on the Green to the Boat House on Central Park lake for DINNER
8:00PM or so, back to hotel and crash for trip home next A.M.

That's one way to spend your limted time.

Just a suggestion for a day and a half. Rather than being indoors all the time this allows some time to realize one's in NYC.

A bit more stimulating that going to the musuem to sit in front of a TV screen. Might as well stay home for that, in my opinion.

Allows the family to take in great gulps of NYC air. LOL

Here might be a silly question but I have to ask. I honestly don't know. Can you go ice skating year round or does it change to roller skating in the summer at Rockefeller Center?

I second the wax museum...

Ok, other things you might be interested in doing:

Go to Mars 2112. It's kind of cool.
Hang out in Times Square.
Go to the Toys R US- it's awesome.
Shopping on Canal Street.
Ice Skating
the Intrepid (though it might take awhile.)

I have my books and my poetry to protect me...

Regarding the Wax Museum: I know I would love it... but are there enough "modern" celebs featured that my 13 year old daughter would recognize and make it worth her while? This trip is for her so I want to be sure she enjoys it - especially since its not cheap. Also - how much time would you say it takes to go through the whole place?

There's an entire "party" room that has modern day celebs, there's a sort of banquet hall area that has more poitical figures, there's a sports people area, a music people area, there's an area that is sort of creepy that features the French Revolution. I'm sure your entire family would enjoy it.

Bulldog, I'm so happy I'm not your kid. You'd be the parent with the agenda (the paper agenda, not the personality) and alarm built into your watch to keep us on schedule.

Though I do agree that it would be great to get in as much as you can of the city, particularly if it's the first time.

Also be sure to check out Lincoln Center, it's best at night when the Met opens their curtains to reveal two Chagalls and the fountain is illuminated and running. Nothing like it. Updated On: 1/15/04 at 03:31 AM

Ha! Touche.

I also recommend going to Cafe Lalo (Amsterdam and 83rd). It was effing amazing even before Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan got to it. Great desserts, fun Euro setting. Updated On: 1/15/04 at 06:41 AM

NYC has some the best museums in the country but, I would have to agree that being outside allows you to really experience the city itself. If your stay were longer I would suggest that you check out places like MOMA and The Guggenheim.

On a short stay walking around Times Square, The Village, 5th Ave, Central Park and a trip to the top of The Empire State Building will give you a great sense of the city and everything it has to offer.

Metropolitan Museum of Art
Green Market at Union Square (not in winter)
Walk around the Village
Go to Zabar's and Fairway

(I am guilty of not reading the original question, I apologize
a family of four on limited time couldn't do the above things) Updated On: 1/19/04 at 11:27 AM

I liked Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. I got to mingle with all the celebs and had a great conversation with Liz Smith. It was fun!
