If I were Randy Newman, I'd so churn out a song about that right now.
As for me -- I ate a piece of honey cake with my lunch and hate myself immensely for it.

I know this is supposed to be a serious thread where people can vent, BUT... some of you need serious help. And I don't mean that lightly. Some of you are clearly depressed and should get counseling. Some of you have serious phobia issues (fear of the PHONE? I hope you were kidding) and need help for that. You can't function when a fear of something so simple has a hold of you. No wonder you feel you are standing behind a wall that you will never get over. GET HELP NOW. It is available for EVERYONE, money should not be an excuse.
Kel, whoever told you teachers are in demand and that you would have no problem getting a job LIED to you. Here in Chicago they are laying teachers off.

Sueleen, I'm very quickly learning this. In my hometown teaching positions are not too hard to come by, but up here...not so much.
So now I am looking in to all sorts of other possibilities and starting to wonder if $40,000 worth of debt was worth this degree.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 1:59pmIn my hometown and surrounding areas, they are BEGGING for teachers and even bringing people over from foreign countries to teach, they are so desperate.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 2:01pmYeah, in my home county, I got offered a teaching job and I didn't even have a teaching degree (it was teaching journalism, which I do have a degree in). But then who the hell wants to earn $20,000-something a year and live in Danbury, Texas?

Oh I am sure you can find a teaching position SOMEWHERE, but do you really WANT that position? If your passion is to TEACH then yes, you could move to the back-woods and open a little school house, but if you want to be a teacher in a city or make a decent living that is a little harder to come by.
Spider, are you FOLLOWING UP your resumes with a phone call or just mailing them out and hoping one will stick?

No, I am calling. I have even gotten letters back saying, "We will keep your resume for a year . . . blah, blah, blah." And a lot of them are from the paper and doesn't say which company I am applying for, so I can't call them.
I even have a temp agency looking for me and no luck!

Posted: 5/18/07 at 2:09pmStick with it and don't get discouraged. And get out of the house, for god's sake.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 2:12pmHave you had an informed third party look at your resume and cover letter?

I had someone on here look at that works in a HR department, but that was months ago. But, I don't personally know anyone that works with Resume's enough to really have any input and a lot of places make you pay for the evaluation and I don't have enough money to do that.
I get out of the house, but with gas prices being the way they are, I can't do TOO much.

ugh, here in Pittsburgh it's nearly impossible to get a teaching job unless you teach a foreign language. In that case, they'll bring you in no matter how underqualified you are. But it really depends on the place--some cities are overflowing with teeachers and others are begging for them. Location, location, location!
In any case, I was using a bit of hyperbole when I said I have a fear of the phone. It does make me nervous to call people that I don't really know, but it doesn't usually impair my life in any way. It's just a bit of an issue.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 2:52pmThe teaching job issue is even harder to understand and accept when there are people who are dying to do it and then people who are dying BECAUSE they do it. You know, the old bitter racist burnt out teachers who only see their students as a funny sounding name and who make fun of them to their friends? The ones who are just treading water until they can get their full retirement packages...you know, the ones who pretend to be all full of the spirit and would just as soon see their kids shoot it out and get it over with? I say, kick those horrible teachers to the curb and make way for some fresh blood.
