Kel-
notice I didn't say I wasn't out of the dark, just not as in the dark as you might suspect.

Laugh at me if you will, but I still say there is more to this story that has caused this behavior.

Husk - I'm not laughing. At all.

I still maintain that WHATEVER was going on, if this is how they responded, they are miniature barbarians.

husk, I'm not laughing at you, but the fact that you did two days of observations is like lighting a matching in a room the size of the Grand Canyon. Two days of observing and not being the one responsible for the kids and their actions and the safety of everyone in that room isn't enough to really claim to "get it". It does give you a little insight, but VERY little.

DG, darling, I'm 24 and I would NEVER have thought of raising a hand to an adult. I wouldn't even think of talking back to an adult, other than my parents when I was a teenager, but that was quickly nipped in the bud. There seems to be a huge influx of kids who are being raised by parents who want to be seen as "cool" and as the child's friend. As a (very- THANK GOD!) soon to be parent and I want to raise my child and future children to respect all people, adults, peers and most importantly themselves. I want to give my children everything that they need and most of what they want, but to know that things are not given to them "just because they want it". Things need to be earned or deserved for a valid reason. Behavior like I see on a daily basis from other students will never been seen as acceptable or "normal". Thankfully many people that I know who are pregnant or have very young children are of the same mindset. Maybe we can see a change in the upcoming generation.

"Kind of makes me concerned about the future when these kids are adults."

That's what concerns me. What will happen when these kids are in the workforce and are told to meet a deadline, or required to complete a task not to their liking?

The potential for violence as they go through adolescence, college and enter the world is very concerning.

Discipline, personal responsibility, respect, authority - I wonder what is happening to these concepts?

If my siblings and I ever pulled any crap like some of the kids are pulling today my mom would drop kick me. Both my parents have always said that they are here to be my parents first and my friend second.

I think most parents today are afraid to say "No" to there kids. I heard it a lot from my mom and dad and I think I turned out fine.

BGG, you should be very thankful that I would only drop kick you! My mother would have skinned me alive if I ever even talked back to a teacher!
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

bgg and mom, on behalf of any educators who have had contact with you and your family- THANK YOU! Parents who raise their kids to be functional, respectful, and responsible members of society don't get the thanks and appreciation that they deserve.

I was a youth group advisor for a few years (14-18 year olds).

At a convention, a few kids (age 16) decided it would be cool to rip out elevator buttons and damage one of the hotel elevators.

Now - these are kids from affluent families and from what I would call the suburbs.

Sure - they were doing teenage prank things. I get that. But here's the "interesting" thing.

The hotel naturally billed the group for the damage which was passed on to the three parents. They paid the bill BUT

at the next parent/advisor meeting - one of them condemned us for not watching after their kids. That obviously more supervision was needed to control 20 kids (more than the 5 advisors that were there.)

I was about to speak up when another parent (thankfully) took the lead and said EXACTLY what I was thinking

She said "It's not their job to raise our children. If your child doesn't know at age 16 that detroying private property is a crime, then you have an issue at home you need to take care of. You should be damn thankful the hotel didn't press charges"

Good for her. Did the other parent shut up?

This whole thing really gets under my skin. Sometimes I think it would be easier to teach orphans.

Oh.. they verbally sparred for a few rounds :)

Everyone was amused. Seriously - how do (some) parents try to pawn off basic parenting on someone else as if it's their responsibility.

We had a former superintendent once say "You know, we have parents in this district who'd be perfectly happy if we picked their kids up from the hospital the day they were born and give them back 18 years later."

Unfortunately schools have become the "substitute parent" for many of our students. And as much as you might try, a school cannot raise a child alone. Especially, when many of the parents have different views of what is acceptable behavior than the school does.

I think any teacher would tell you that a large portion of their time is spent on classroom management. And what a joy it is when you have a class where that ISN'T your first priority. I have quite a few of them this year that are wonderful, and it just makes for such an enjoyable experience, for both the teacher and the kids. Not many teachers enjoy spending their time being the disciplinarian.
