re: Third graders plot teacher attack

"You can't dismiss it," Tanner said. "But because they are kids, they may have thought this was like a cartoon -- we do whatever and then she stands up and she's OK. That's a hard call."

I don't know about that. By third grade I had pretty good grasp on life, death and what it takes to hurt someone.

I don't even know what to say. Absolutely insane.

PRS-
Most of us do, but they are described as having developmental disabilities...so it may not be so clear in their minds.

re: Third graders plot teacher attack

development issues aside - reading the article it sounds like it was a very organized/carefully thought out plan - each person has a specific responsibility. And that's very disturbing.

Now let's sit back and watch as the parents try to sue the school for some insane reason

re: Third graders plot teacher attack

In the school system I taught, the third graders were at adult age, so they could have been charged.

re: Third graders plot teacher attack

Jane, what does that mean? Are you saying you taught adults at a 3rd grade mentality?

And if so, what does that have to do with this? These were kids.....and in no US state could they be charged as adults?

I am confused by your post......

I was joking, Elphaba.

My school system had the lowest scoring students in the country. They were left back so many times, that they were already teenagers in the the third grade. We'd joke about it in school, sorry.

re: Third graders plot teacher attack

on the news this morning, they said that three of the kids have been charged. I would be taking a hard look at the teacher in this situation. For this many 3rd graders to be taking part in this kind of plot, I would wonder if the teacher had done something to these kids

(sorry Jane, just thought I was missing something, still early here, no coffee yet, lol)

re: Third graders plot teacher attack

That's ok, Elph. It's a sad situation, but true. We had students in the elementary school who drove to school.

Sorry for the divertissement, back on topic.

re: Third graders plot teacher attack

my Mom was a principal in San Jose Unified SD....and even back then (twenty or so years ago) she had problems......she actually had 4th graders selling drugs on campus........she really cleaned up that school, and pissed off a lot of kids, but did the job well.

I agree Elph - that's an outrageous assertion to make. "Hard look at the teacher" ? Oh for the love of God...

re: Third graders plot teacher attack

Your mom sounds like a great principal Elphaba.

Jane that does sound rough.

The deal with me and that school system is that my brother attended school in Ware County. He had a couple physical disabilities and the teachers decided that he was mentally disabled as well. And when he tried to defend himself against bullies, he was punished, not the kid who stabbed him in his artificial leg. They were quite abusive to him in the long run.

re: Third graders plot teacher attack

I agree, Elph and Moonie.

We once had policemen at our school looking in each kindergarten classroom, trying to identify a boy who had committed a robbery in a store. They found him. Kindergarten!

(well, of course, in our school, the Kindergarteners were 13). oy, Ok, I'll stop!

re: Third graders plot teacher attack

"The children, ages 8 to 10, were apparently mad at the teacher because she had scolded one of them for standing on a chair, Tanner said."

So the obvious response is to band together like pack animals and attack?!?!?

Who, or what, is raising these barbarians?

Your tale, Ms. D'Amore, has no bearing on this case. I stand by my statement that your assertion is outrageous.

third graders plot teacher attack

don't immediately jump to the conclusion that the children were developmentally disabled. the article states that she taught an ld class and specifically mentioned add, dd and hyperactivity. add and hyperactivity have too often become a catch-all euphemism for uncontrollable kids.

what porbably happnened was that she was going to suggest that their drugs get shut off and they had been selling them to support their heroin habits. faced with losing their cash flow, they moved to take the bitch out.

third graders plot teacher attack

I'm not saying that the kids should get off scot-free. I am just saying that it doesn't seem that kids would go that nuts over being told not to stand on a chair. i think it would be irresponsible not to check that there wasn't something else occurring.

re: Third graders plot teacher attack

True story-I was the art teacher in the school. I had a student in the fifth grade who was the only one in his class who showed real artistic talent. I always encouraged him in this area, as he had trouble in all his other classes and I thought he might have a future in the arts. I had been his art teacher for several years, and was quite sure of his talent.

We were having the annual fire prevention poster contest. I had his class draw preliminary sketches to see if any of them had a chance in the contest.

This student, I'll call "M" had the best sketch. I called him up to my desk and told him his was the best idea, and did he want a poster board to copy it over onto, so that I could enter it in the contest. He said no.

The next day, his mother appeared outside my classroom door (unannounced, btw).
I went out in the hall with her, and she said this "I understand you told my son he had no talent." I then told her what I REALLY said. She then asked me if I was calling her son a liar, and stormed down to the principal's office to file a "case."

Of course, I was called down there also. Thank goodness my principal was on top of things and the whole thing didn't go very far, but I'd like to mention that "M" was polling the rest of the students in his class to see how many of them thought I said that he had no talent.

And to make matters worse, our VICE PRINCIPAL heard about that survey and believed the students.

This is just one of the kinds of frustrating situations some teachers must deal with. I suffered through 25 years of it.

Yes, it does take this little sometimes - witness many, many stories like Jane's. These are kids, after all. Nothing - NOTHING - warrants the marshalling of weapons and a thoughtful, well-planned scheme. Although there will probably be parents who whine "Well, let's take a hard look at the teacher." Unbelievable.

re: Third graders plot teacher attack

I'm sure the entire situation will be investigated, including whether this teacher was particularly tough or stern. However, there is NO excuse for creating this type of attack. I think the thing that scared me the most was fact that they had kids assigned to "clean up". To me, that means they planned on using those weapons and knew it could get messy.

And people wonder why you can't get more people to be teachers.........
