At first I thought this was going to be a cute little funny video but wow. Scary.
the Pacific Sun ran into a heavy storm
I wonder if this was the same ship where they showed the water crashing through the windows?
We experienced some pretty rough seas when I was on a Princess cruise from NZ to Australia five years ago... but that was just whining. This is scary!
Edit: Same incident

Yeesh. Why do I get the feeling nautical safety protocol fell on deaf ears with this cruise line?

I'm surprised more people weren't seriously injured. That furniture is moving FAST.
You'd think that they would find a way to secure the tables.
That was a thought that occurred to me as well, tazber. At first it seemed kinda funny, but when you saw the AMOUNT of furniture and the speed with which it was moving, scaled against those people tumbling along in the middle of it... that's frightening. That's an awful lot of unsecured weight rocking back and forth on the ship.

The safest place would probably be your cabin. We usually get the smallest/cheapest cabins so there really isn't much that can completely roll around and get out of control.
Edit: With all the progressive equipment, you would think they would have some warning and either prevent going towards the storm or warn passengers to stay in their cabins or a more secure place where things can't move and roll around so much.
Very scary. I doubt there were no injuries with the way everyone was tumbling around.
I was on a Disney Cruise back in May in the Mediterranean that experienced 20 foot waves and was taking in water. I don't remember moving furniture, but folks were falling (and vomiting) a lot. It was a very unpleasant 4 hours of rocking back and fourth before we were able to sail out of it. They handled it well, handing out lots of motion sickness medicine, telling us to stay as low and central as possible, and the bartenders didn't charge me for ginger ale.

I have never been drawn to taking a cruise. That did nothing to change my mind.
This is why I will not go on a cruise. I would be in hysterics if faced with something like that. It's one of my worst nightmares.
We had some pretty rough seas (one day with 12 - 18 foot waves) crossing the Atlantic earlier this summer on the QM2, but nothing like that. At most we felt a sort of gentle rocking and no furniture (or people) went flying.
Something like that would have had me in hysterics too.
The Norwegian Dawn was hit by a wave to its 10th deck. It's a gorgeous ship chock full of orignal art. It blew in plate glass doors and although there was much damage, only a few were hurt, and not critically as far as I recall.
After the tsunami several years ago, we routinely had 30+ foot waves. Margaret Cho joked about clinbing 'up the stage in high heels' while we watched the curtains sway right behind her.
Performing on a ship is very difficult in the best of circumstances. I know many a performer who has fallen, got hit, or had to puke immediately after getting offstage.
I was on a cruise last week in the caribbean during Hurricane Earl. They had to change the itinerary around so we could avoid it, and cut out one island altogether. We had a day at sea instead, which was quite rocky and rainy. Nothing like this though!
And everything was bolted down, which was smart.
And this is why I will never step foot on another ship as long as I live. The first cruise I was on, we had the same thing happen. EVERYTHING in the cabin ended up broken.
Then, I ended up working on a ship for 6 months and seeing this kind of thing happen.
Don’t look to the crew for help, because you will get none. I remember the screams and people yelling as if they were being killed, and they were the crew members.
When it comes right down to it, its every man for themselves when this stuff happens.

that was pretty wild.
Imagine how those Christopher Columbus and Henry Hudson explorer people did it.
Was that a piano rolling by?

Oh, come on. This stuff makes the news because it IS news. That's like saying you'd never get in a car because car crashes happen. Or you'd never fly because sometimes planes crash, too.
I will never see Patti LuPone live because sometimes she yells at people.
The North Sea in a Cyclonic Force 8 is very entertaining, too.

It's about your own personal level of anxiety and some people have crippling anxieties about cars and planes as well. That's why I said this particular scenario was one of my worst nightmares. I don't have anxiety about planes or cars, but boats and ships are a different matter for me. These stories and videos only reinforce that. Rough seas may not be as common as car crashes, but they are FAR more common than plane crashes. It's not that I think the ship is going to sink, but it's being tossed around like that coupled with that atmosphere of chaos and turmoil. I'd probably lock myself in my cabin for the remainder of the cruise.
With every mode of transportation, there is always a level or risk, be it physical, emotional or psychological, which must be weighed against the individual's wants, needs, desires and fears. Most of these decisions do not require much conscious effort on our part, but others tap into our phobias and we are forced to assess the situation and if the end result is worth the risk. For me, there are so many other things I love to do, there is no benefit in putting myself into that situation, especially since I will most likely never need to be on a cruise to enjoy a vacation. I can probably enjoy nearly all the benefits of a cruise liner without ever having to actually go on a cruise. The only thing I'd probably truly miss is the view of being surrounded by the sea for days at a time, which sounds like absolute torture to me.
Motorcycle, no helmet, zipping in and out of lanes of traffic at 80 mph on an interstate highway. NEVER going to happen!
Matt, I totally understand where you're coming from. I will admit that I was a little nervous at the prospect of being trapped on a boat for six days, and when the captain announced that we would be encountering some rough seas for a few days I had a flash of "oh ****, what have I gotten myself into?" But my desire to experience a transatlantic crossing overrode whatever (minor) fears I had, and I must say that overall it exceeded my expectations and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
I still wouldn't want to experience anything like that seen in the video, but I'd rather go through that on a ship than wild turbulence on a plane.
I won't sleep with men under 25 because sometimes people get salmonella.
