This could only happen in my school

This could only happen in my school

In the hallway down near the gymnasiums in my school, team photos are dsplayed dating back many years. They are all labeled "63-64", "71-72", "90-91". Today I spotted a sophomore staring at these pictures and shaking his head. I approached him and asked what was wrong. He said, in total simplicity, "It's a f_____ing shame that we keep losing every year by one point".

I couldn't make these things up if I tried!

I worked for a company in California and there were territories for the sales people. One of the assistants calls out to all the sales reps at their desks

"Excuse me.. I'm trying to find out - is there a WEST Virginia?"

To which a few shouted back "YES!"

She replied "Well where exactly is it?"

I happen to be walking in the area and shouted back "You know where Virginia is? It's just WEST of there"

The room laughs

I then push it a little further and explain "And before you ask.. Yes.. North AND South Dakota and North and South Carolina..."

Our school (fondly referred to as "The Mecca of Education") has just been named on of "the ten most dangerous schools in New York City" by the NYC Police Department.

We had a big fight in the cafeteria about a week ago and three police vans were needed to cart off all the students who were arrested. The next day found additional police and security guards in the building. That Monday the students staged a "protest" outside th building. They complained that the additional police were making it difficult for them to concentrate on their lessons. The news media were present to cover the event.

During the course of the "protest" one girl pushed another and a full-fledged fracas broke out--all of which was covered by Eyewitness News and The Daily News.

I can't wait to retire.

..and why don't people use the word "Fracas" more often?

North and South Dakota
North and South Carolina

Why isn't it East and West Virginia?

In my gazillion years working box office, I experienced some real doozies. Some of my favorites:

"How much are the ten-dollar seats?"
"Will the Nutcracker be performed in English this year?"
"Well, who is Mozart? Is he the director or the conductor?"
"Do the seats face the stage?"
"Will I be able to see good from there?"
"How many feet from the stage is the seat?"

-"The seats are in the orchestra."
-"I don't want to sit in the orchestra! I want to sit in the audience!"

-"The seats are on the side next to the wall."
-"Is that in the center?"

I DID retire because of those things happening in my school system, which was the first to be taken over by the state, as our reading and math scores were the lowest in the country. When a parent came to see a teacher, a security guard had to accompany them because of so many attacks on teachers. That kind of stuff!

The sad thing is, I don't think this could only happen in your school. Most scholls are substandard these days and kids are not learning as they should. Once again it all comes down to low salaries and lack of respect for the profession of teaching so that not as many people are attracted to the job anymore.

I went to Catholic school and the nuns were vicious but, all those kids learned something under the threat of the ruler across the back of the hand.

Mister Matt - years ago when I did the cruise ship thing - there was a list of most frequently asked stupid questions (which unfortunately I cannot remember most of) but the two that stuck with me were - "do these steps go up?" and "What time is the Midnight buffet?"...Yikes and Crikey and Harumph!

Really, Dollypop, did you NOT see the SISTER ACT movies? (I know, I know you "Hate" bla bla bla...) But you need to get these kids focused on something positive, something worth while, something creative...something like, oh...I don't know...a production of HELLO DOLLY!!???!! All they need is for you to put your hand in there and before you know it they will be "dancing."

PEACE.

Orion, you are so right. The lack of respect for teachers is appalling. What's worse is that there's almost nothing a teacher can say or do when faced with this lack of respect. Say one wrong word or do one wrong thing and you're being taken to court. I'm SO GLAD I'm out of there!!!!! Haha, that's my good news of the day for that other thread- I AM OUT OF TEACHING!

It's not only from students but our society in general seems to have less respect for teaching than it did years ago. Parents always seem so reday to go against a teacher or sue the school district and they hardley ever get involved with the schools and tecahers to help their kids do better.

At the risk of sounding like my parents: back when I was in school and you misbehaved, the nuns would slap the hell out of you and then call your parents so they could do the same when you got home. God forbid your parents didn't show up for a parent teacher confrence day. The nuns would go slap the hell out them too.

Hmmm there's sister Act 2, Dangerous Minds (I think thats what it is called), and that movie with the math teacher in the inner city school in LA (I think it was LA) who ended up convincing the school board to let him teach an ap class in math and all his students got perfect grades on the AP test. If anyone remembers the name of the last movie I'd appreciate it. "It's the gahness!"

Orion, honestly, those were the good ol' days... i respect and love the hell out of my parents for bringing me up the way they did, taking an active part in my and my brothers and sisters lives, and showing us how to be courteous and respectful, in order to EARN courtesy and respect... nowadays, kids are demanding it and if not getting it, getting "even"...

I can see now those were the good (i won't say old) days. I even grew to understand the crazed nuns behaviours and if i had children would send them to be taught to by sadistic, frustrated, half crazy old nuns.....do they even exist anymore in this country?

i don't think they are allowed to exist any more... these days, if nuns like that existed, they would have been sued already...

Then I'll just have to send little Liam and Zoe off to Europe so they can have the plaesure of learning from women whoshow only their hands and face, travel between the convent and the scholl via underground tunnels and have a complete arsenal of yard sticks, rulers and wooden rods for discipline
