"Question: had he been born in HI 2 years sooner, would he still be eligible?
I don't know what HI's status was before the admission on 8/21/59."
What about all the American presidents who were not born in the U.S. because they were born before 1776? Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Jackson, and Harrison?
It seems it could well be argued that since these presidents were born in Virginia, Mass. and the Carolinas before they were states, a candidate born in Hawaii before it was a state should also be eligible.
In any event, I always argued that in addition to being actually, really and undeniably born in the state of Hawaii when it was a state, and not in Kenya, that even if Obama had been born in Kenya to an American mother, he would/should be eligible. So I'm not going to change my mind on that because it's a candidate I don't support. I leave hypocrisy to the hypocrites.
Since people born in geographic areas that later became U.S. states don't have to be "naturalized" but instead become by operation of law U.S. citizens either at the time the United States became the United States, or at the time their birthplace became part of a state of the United States, than they are "natural born citizens of the United States". It's either one or the other.
