It's a trend of societal attitude that Michael Moore has tried to draw attention to in both Sicko and Bowling for Columbine. In both he very pointedly asks "What are we becoming? Is this how we want to treat each other?"
In the pursuit of 'success' we are beating the crap out of each other, or separating from each other, and losing the ability to trust, confide, admit weakness or vulnerability, and seek help.
Neighbors are transient, (truly loving, non-fundie, non-judgmental) church fellowships are dwindling, jobs are shorter and shorter term, long distance relationships don't offer the same support, and then if the family is dysfunctional what source of support is left?
The other day I was wondering if psychotherapists and 12 step groups have assumed the roles that have been lost by other groups.
