re: to the socially liberal republicans...

Whoops! I didn't read further....

"You are asking me to accept a belief system that I don't agree with."

Now it's a tie for best pot/kettle statement. It really is difficult to choose.

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

I have goth blocked, because his freak ravings and unsupported opinions don't warrant reading. Plus, I am not going to give voice to a raging bigot. But seeing how he has been quoted in a few posts, I will address that issue.

Why I am right about this issue:

If I get what I want, all Americans get treated equally. It doesn't affect you. IT DOESN'T AFFECT YOU.

If you get what you want, not all Americans get treated equally. It affects me. IT AFFECTS ME.

On a civil rights issue, YOU ARE WRONG. Your opinion is your opinion, but as a manner of public policy, YOU ARE WRONG.

My equal rights SHOULD NOT be decided by the people, but by what is fair for all Americans.

Thank you jrb for putting it so logically and concisely.

Gothamp, what a pompous, moralistic piece of crap to say. I'm not asking you to accept anything. What I am asking for is equality, I will not accept anything less.

And as a side note, my relationship with my partner is equal to any married couple including yours , if you're married. Care to disagree?

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

Exactly, I don't see how demanding equal rights is asking anyone to accept my viewpoint. Honestly, I don't care how Goth or anyone else feels about gay marriage. Let them go to Church everyone Sunday and pray for me to burn in hell if they want to. But as a matter of public policy equal rights should be given to everyone in this country. In fact Goth...isn't supporting a gay marriage ban imposing a certain moral belief on the entire nation?
I know this is something that will not be resolved overnight. I also know that if Kerry got elected he would not have been a gay marriage crusader. But that does not change the fact that the current administration is running on a platform that wants to make discrimination part of the US constitution.

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

Like I said, the key is to get homosexuality declared a "from birth state of being" equal to left handedness, hair color, etc. THEN any anti-gay legislature can be squashed by the 14th Amendment.

I recently watched a movie called "Simple Justice" which follows the story of Thurgood Marchal and the NAACP and the events that led up to Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. It took them years to find just the right case, and get just the right 'green light' from a lower court to send Brown to the Supreme Court.

So if I were a homosexual, I would be more interested in getting the ACLU or some other organization to try to get the "homosexuality is not a choice" in stone from the Supreme Court than I would be in b!tching about the election not going my way.

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

Oh Rodney...that's never going to happen.

Because, although someday it may be proven that same-sex attraction is innate, people can still argue that it is a choice to live as an open homosexual.

Fact is, nothing needs to happen right now in order for GLBTQ people to have thier rights fully protected under the 14th Amend. to the Const.

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

So my viewpoint is ridiculed and I'm labeled a bigot. And you wonder why a conservative President was reelected and 11 states voted down your issue?

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

Gotham..I don't know what your viewpoint is because I don't remember ever reading what your view on gay marriage is on these boards. And to be honest, I don't really care, I don't know you and probably will never meet you..so if you want to choose to believe gay marriage is wrong..then so be it.
What is wrong is trying to make a certain moral viewpoint written into the constitution. That is imposing a certain groups religious/moral beliefs on the entire Nation. EXAXTLY what you accuse Liberals of doing. When it comes down to it, denying a certaing group basic rights under the constitution is wrong, no matter what you believe..

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

I'm going to try to explain it...nicely.

You, Gotham, are completely entitled to your viewpoint. I am entitled to think of that viewpoint however I wish.

However, no matter how much I may disagree, even hate, what you say, I could and would never support legislation or a Constitutional Amendment to limit your beliefs, thoughts, words or the right to practice any religion you'd like. Not only would I never support that, I would fight to my dying breath to ensure that you continue to have those rights.

You, on the other hand, seem to think it's perfectly acceptable that what you find abhorrent in regards to my beliefs, should indeed be legislated, although that would be in direct contrast to the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution.

Do you truly not see the disconnect?

Erik, people's viewpoints are not changed by screaming at them and calling them names.

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

Who did I scream at or call names? I think I've (as well as other board members (RobbieJ comes to mind))been making pretty level headed arguements without resorting to any sort of name calling...

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

rodney- you have a great point. if it could be proven that homosexuality is a trait one is born with, i believe this fight would be rectified within the next five years. however, what if all homosexual tendencies are not innate? i have a close friend who is a lesbian. by her own explanation she "became" a lesbian after a brutal rape. she unfortunately believes she could never again engage in a sexual relationship with a man because of the trauma she went through. she has been a lesbian for fifteen years. this is just one person, but my question is why does it have to be something that is not chosen? does it matter? that may be dividing those who choose and those who are born that way. how would you include those who are bi-sexual? but i do see your point. it would be a much easier road to equality if science proved homosexuality to be a natural trait.

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

My Republican friends say "Bush is only using you to placate the Religious Right. Don't worry--he doesn't think you're a second-class citizen. I don't either."

My Republican friends say "Bush only wants to put Clarence Thomas in as Supreme Court Justice to win over conservative African-Americans. Don't worry--this won't affect your life."

My Republican friends say "Bush only wants to roll back stem-cell research to look pro-life despite his stances on guns and the death penalty. Don't worry--he won't overturn Roe v Wade."

My Republican friends say "If you insist on equal rights, you're forcing me to believe something that is against my principles: which is that you are not entitled to equal rights."

My Republican friends are not my friends.

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

Erik, that was a general statement, not meant to be criticism toward you. It was directed toward you, one of the less screechy members of the board, because it's a point that has to be considered and I'm hoping that if I ignore others they will stop screeching.

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

Gothamp, I'm curious now, what is your view on gay marriages/civil unions? Are they equal to your relationships? Should gays and lesbians have the same rights as straights in terms of marriage (whether it is marriage or civil unions)?

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

Reading this brought back memories of my "question to gays" post. I belive an intelligent level-headed discussion can change many people's minds (it did with my class)

Count me as another hetero who will fight for your rights.

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

I go to a really small school (Grades 6-12 with 50 students total) and there are no gays (at least not out). I believe that it is for this reason that people are more comfortable expressing their biggotted thoughts. I am the one student to be involved with theater and one of the only ones to have out gay friends. I had had enough of the biggotry and snide comments so I started the post that I linked below. Everyone here was great in sharing their views and I asked if it was ok with them if I shared it with the class. I can't say everyone in my class changed their views but I know some did, and every little bit counts.

This is just one more way that BWW is changing the world...a little bit at a time.

FAE........ "but my question is why does it have to be something that is not chosen?"

Because then it CAN'T be discriminated against just like race, gender, etc.
#71

re: to the socially liberal republicans...

Rodney- I agree with you completely...except for the fact that in today's world people can choose their race/gender and the courts have upheld their rights.
