Yeah, I'm not a huge Lost in Translation or Royal Tenenbaums fan. How about Chicago? :P
ETA- Finding Nemo! Love that movie. Heck, even The Triplets of Belleville was better than The Royal Tenenbaums. And The Incredibles!
Okay, I'm on an animation kick.

I'd vote for Chicago over those any day.
Well, to each his own, but although I enjoyed a lot of things about those films on your list (Ellen Burstyn above all) I found most of those movies to have huge problems in carrying out thier great promise. Perhaps the term "Too clever for their own good" applies. None are perfect, in my opinion.
I HATED Eternal Sunshine for that very reason, Sueleen.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy is on the top of my list (and, if seen as separate movies, would still take spots 1, 2 and 3).
It's truly groundbreaking cinema, and I don't think anything produced in the last twenty years even comes close to achieving what it has achieved. For decades, no one ever thought it possible to commit to film such an immense narrative with so many settings and over 25 major characters -- much less do it in such a gorgeous and dramatic way. It's the epic to end all epics.

*smack* Don't you insult Eternal Sunshine like that, buster.
And I'm going to continue putting my fingers in my ears and pretending all things LOTR don't exist.
How about The Pianist?
LOL, Plum. I know you're not a LOTR fan, but have you even seen the movies? You take any frame from those films, print it out and hang it on a wall!
Pianist bored me as well, Plum. Take THAT!

How about Almodovar's last two films: Talk to Her and Bad Education?

Well, I won't take that latter thing too personally, poppy. But Eternal Sunshine is my precious. *pets it*
Sideways? I was so bored during that movie.
I wasn't. In fact...

Hmm...how to stir the pot a bit?
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
*runs away*
in no particular order:
Chicago
Moulin Rouge
Finding Neverland
Under the Tuscan Sun
Chocolat
Mean Girls
The Notebook
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Besides the three LORD OF THE RINGS films, I thought ATANARJUAT (THE FAST RUNNER) was a pretty remarkable movie. Released in 2002, it was the first Inuit movie ever made and was surprisingly well-crafted, with powerful performances from first-time actors.
I really want to see that movie, Wizard.
And Plum, we're 3 for 3 .
Crouching Tiger
Vera Drake
Million Dollar Baby
Capturing the Friedman's
The Incredibles
Capote
Fahrenheit 9/11
y Tu Mama Tambien
Talk to Her
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is easily my number one.

I was kind of kidding about Crouching Tiger, pop. I mean, I liked it, but I don't think there's enough...there there for it to be considered some kind of all-time masterpiece. The only one of my choices I'd defend to the death is Eternal Sunshine.

I agree. Eternal Sunshine is easily the finest film I've seen this decade so far and would be on my all-time top ten list (if I could come up with one).
Put me on the fan list for ETERNAL SUNSHINE.
I would add HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH on my top ten, too; even after so many viewings, it's still highly enjoyable.
I adore Eternal Sunshine. It's just not one of my all-time favorites.
