Some impressions:

1. It looks very good.
2. In between playing W and Dan White, Josh Brolin must feel really dirty lately.
3. Loving the period detail and doc footage.
4. Allison Pill is completely unrecognizable.

I think Sean Penn looks great. I watched a documentary recently on Harvey Milk and Sean has his mannerisms and look down perfect.

This years 'Brokeback Mountain'.

For those not familiar with Harvey Milk, check this out. Its in 10 parts which you can watch on the left. Didn't White get released? I remember his release was very unfair and no justice to Harvey.

Released, paroled and then committed suicide actually. See what too many twinkies can do?

But really- PLEASE do not compare this to Brokeback Mountain.

Oh, that's right, I had forgotten that this was the "Twinkie Defense" case. Anyway, this looks GREAT. I'm really looking forward to seeing James Franco in a dramatic role. Also, I wouldn't compare this to Brokeback Mountain. It looks more like "RFK" to me.

Well, I am not really comparing the movie itself to Brokeback but as another gay themed Oscar contender.

Hopefully this will be much better than BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. From the looks of the trailer, it definitely seems like it's destined to be a wonderful film.
I love that Gus Van Saint hired a few of Broadway's best gay actors to be part of this movie: the brilliant Victor Garber, Dennis O'Hare, and Stephen Spinella.
EW mentioned this movie on their fall preview and said that the actor playing Milk's partner has more Oscar buzz than Sean Penn. Who is playing his partner? Emile Hirsch or Diego Luna?
Either way, after seeing the trailer, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it.

this looks like a good film, but does anybody remember hearing some comments from James Franco a few weeks ago about how difficult/uncomfortable the kissing scenes with Sean Penn were? I remember reading this somewhere, and thinking that it was odd and innapropriate (even if he was uncomfortable) considering the film is all about acceptance and equality. You don't hear gay actors complaining that a straight kissing scene was "uncomfortable". At least I never have.

Wouldn't be surprised if the "suicide" was a murder.

The film looks fantastic!

I just read about Harvey Milk on Wikipedia since I didn't know anything about the case. Wow. White only served 5 years...that's incredible.

The trailer looks great and I'll have to watch the documentary sometime soon.

This 'situation' was used as part of the propoganda against me by my step-father, so I don't know if I'll actually be able to watch the movie. I'm CERTAINLY glad that it has FINALLY been made (it's been 'in the works' for YEARS!) but, since I don't need the 'lessons' involved, I'm not sure I want to put myself through what is sure to be an emotional roller-coaster ride.

But I DO want to *bump* this thread and keep it alive.

I strongly suggest anyone who has not seen the documentary I linked to from youtube to watch it. Its very well done and informative. I saw it about a year ago and am ashamed to say I had no idea who Harvey Milk was. I think this film will do well.

I saw James Franco on a late night tv show (Letterman, maybe?) and I was quite disappointed about the way he was talking about the filming - how uncomfortable it was to have to kiss Sean Penn on day one, the nude scene, etc. Gratned, he was pushing the stoner movie (the name escapes me) but still.

I saw Franco on Letterman too and feel the same. The way he talked about it was quite uncomfortable and I didn't really know what to think of it. It's a good thing he's pretty!

Anyway, I'm definitely excited to see this. What a great cast!

This looks great, Sean's performance looks fantastic.

I urge everyone to see "The Times of Harvey Milk" and educates themselves on how courageous this great man was. His murder is only the crazy, horrible end to an inspirational story. Thanks for posting the youtube link.

It won the oscar and several other Best Documentary awards that season of 84/85...and Harvey Fierstein won an emmy for his narration.

"For the first time in my memory, we have a major Oscar movie that actually is a gay agenda movie. But on the making, it is so much more. It is a brilliant, powerfully humane piece of work that reaches well beyond the issue of gay rights or any idea that this is a gay-only film.

Sean Penn gives an Oscar lock performance of power and subtlety that ranks with the best of his career.

Great work by Franco, Hirsch, and Josh Brolin, who may not have enough screen time or empathy for awards, but got the mixed emotions of a murderer so right that I felt my blood go cold watching a shot of him walking a fateful hallway.

And the mixture of doc footage and this drama is amazing, pushing the bar farther and racking up another great piece by Harris Savides."

I watched the red carpet arrivals last night in the Castro. With the "No On 8" Supporters across the street, all the local politico's and drag queens and the movie stars, it really felt like Harvey was there too, and his message was still getting out. Too bad this movie isn't released before the election. I cannot WAIT to see it.

My main concern was that they were going to turn this into the typical, shallow, saccharine Hollywood biopic. The facts are dramatic enough--and inspirational enough--on their own. This month's San Francisco Magazine's cover story is on the "making of" and it did quite a bit to alleviate my concerns so I'm hopeful.

The article also links to a good side article on Milk's longer term influence so don't miss that either.
