the film that really tore me to shreads was ordanairy people. tim hutton was amazing and i can't even express how much i identified with his character. it's one of the only movies i've let myself cry at, and i did... the hours is another one of those movies that beats me up. i loved the book sooooo much and i had no idea how it was going to be a film, but man... that's some hardcore depressing material. i love when meryl and ed harris are talking and he's like, "who's this party for?" and she's like, "what do you mean, what are you trying to say?" "i think i'm only living to satisfy you." "well that's what people do. they live for eachother." paraphrasing there, that might not be verbatiam but i think it rings true- there are times i'd prefer not to be around, but you stay alive for the people in your life. james dean in rebel without a cause must be added to the list, another character i can identify with and a performance that turned B- material into an A+ movie ("you're tearing me apaaaaaaaaaart!" "stand up for me, dad. stand up! stand up!"). marlon in on the waterfront kills me... "i coulda been somebody, i coulda been a contender! instead of a bum, which is what i am, let's face it!"
sophie's choice, as mentioned earlier, is phenominal. geez that one got me...
i don't know if anyone caught "jack and bobby" on wendsday night, but this particular gay-themed episode had some really powerful scenes and performances. they rerun it i think on sundays, if you want to catch it.
