UARTS Musical Theatre Program for College...check it!

So in the fall I have decided to attend The University of the Arts' College of Performing Arts as a Musical Theatre Major so I went up to Philadelphia this weekend to check it out again and attend some shows and what not, and there is some RIDICULOUS talent in that school...powerful voices and fierce acting galore...of course, as in all programs, it is clear who the weaker links are but for the most part, the kids there are REALLY on their ****...although the school is not very well known and underappreciated, they produce solid students at the end of the road...and I am glad to see that with more and more alumni putting the school on the map, it is attracting more and more kids and I also learned that there are transfers from CCM, Syracuse, and what not in the program who also appreciate the talent that is there...and being accepted into a couple "top" programs, I am very very excited to start there in the fall after this weeekend and would encourage everyone to take a serious look into the program when making your college decisions!! it is most definately worth your time! just my personal opinion and thought i would share...any questions, i am available to answer...laterrr UARTS Musical Theatre Program for College...check it!

They do not have a "cut" system as far as I know...but between Sophomore and Junior year there is a REALLY tough jury evaluation before you can continue to the "upper" level of training and based on that, you can be advised to leave the program but not cut...and they do senior showcases in PA, NY, and surrounding areas...later

I know I'm biased because I go there, but how extensively did you check out UArts's program? While it's definitely not a program that is for everyone and quite young, being only 15 years old, it's a unique program with a lot of merit and doesn't deserve to be written off immediately. I chose UArts over other schools with higher merit that I was accepted to because the entire school fit for me, including the program which is littered with working professionals and scholarly, trained educators.

I would never claim the program to be perfect, but I think it offers me more than a lot of other schools would.

And, to answer the question, we neither have a cut program nor an official NYC showcase, though students--with the aid of some teachers--have been known to showcase their own cabaret acts in New York after graduation from time to time.

All I ask is that the program is given a chance because it really is great training. :)

I have freiends who went (they're graduating this month!!!) to UArts. They loved loved loved it. I go to Penn State & don't get a ton of exposure to really good student performances. However, I went to a few shows & was amazed!!!

As far as the Musical Theatre program...it gets SUPER tough around the 2nd & 3rd years. My friend had trouble keeping up with the amount of work it all required. Good luck to everyone!!!

straight theatre is is the same as MT. they take the same amount of people. it's very competitive. I graduated from there in '04, and in my MT class there were around 50 kids, split pretty evenly among the sexes. so they take about 100 kids in all.

congrats, champz. have a blast.

one of the most incredible programs in the country. Charles Gilbert, Pattie Raine (the best vocal teacher ever!!!), and Nancy Dussault are amazing teachers. The Acting Program is of repute also. I urge you to apply for this program. There is such an abundance of work and opportunity in Philadelphia as far as Theatre goes. It can start you on your way Im serious. I have a friend who is amazing. She went to AMDA (say what you want about the school but my friend was impeccably prepared), graduated, and transferred to this school. she got into ccm (the enviornment was exceedingly negative and she didnt think the acting curriculum was very strong), point park (teachers were like robots), nyu(too expensive). she chose Uarts because she was close to her mother (who jus passed), the program is like hidden jewel, she was able to get her sag and equity cards because of faculty at the school, the most challenging and supportive enviornment she has ever been in, and is a successful actress out in L.A. because of it as we speak.

If any of you saw, or heard of the recent Philadelphia production of "Bright Lights, Big City", 2 of the performers (Amanda and Coma Baby) are current seniors in MT, and one of them (Brother) is an alum of UArts. I went to high school with Coma Baby, and talked to her, she loves it.

They had the opportunity to do professional theatre with performers like Andy Karl, Orfeh, and Jeremy Kushnier.

Truly a school that is not one of the best in the nation...mediocre at best. A friend went their freshman year and I heard the problems! Dance teachers who weren't challenging, acting teachers who didn't think the Method was better than their own method creation. She transferred to a real musical theater university (OCU) and is now working on Broadway.

Check out leading schools like University of Michigan, Oklahoma City University or Boston Conservatory. They are tops for a reason. There's a reason why these schools have Tony winners as alumni. U of the Arts ain't one of the top schools.

Hey Champ..

Somebody is sharing their experiences of the topic. You don't like it..tough. Grow up. I guess your attitude represents what UofA is all about.

Don't blame someone else for you going to the wrong school.

I recently joined this site and i ran into this board and wanted to say that I have only heard good things about this program and maybe it isnt what most would consider one of the "top schools" but I think its pretty ignorant of you Debbie and Rocky for the comments you made. There are students busting their asses at these schools that you all seem to bash on these boards so take your own advice and "grow up". So more power to you Champ and all you other UARTS students and I wish you much success on all your future endeavors! Dont listen to all the drama because in the end, the name of the school will only impress those silly enough to only be impressed by a name. Best wishes to all!!

Wow Flappin, you just joined the board and your first post is an instant rebutal where you feel you have the right to call people ignorant. Nice try.

Please remember..one screen name per person!

And while you're here for an education, there are no IGNORANT comments made when they are backed up by someone's FACTS. This is a message board, got it? Just because someone doesn't support your precious little views does not make someone IGNORANT.

However, "first time" posters who think their opinion is beter than others sure fit the bill.
Ignorance is temporary. Stupidity last forever. Watch out BWW... HE'S BACK.

With all due respect, my opinions are as justified as any other members no matter how long ago I joined. This thread was at the top of the message boards and consequently the first one I read but feel free to message me if you would like to continue this discussion because this is not what I think the intent of this board is all about.
