UARTS Musical Theatre Program for College...check it! — Page 2

With all due respect, my opinions are as justified as any other members no matter how long ago I joined. This thread was at the top of the message boards and consequently the first one I read but feel free to message me if you would like to continue this discussion because this is not what I think the intent of this board is all about.

Once again, I have to get in on this thread.

I'm not interested in bashing other people's opinions, just broadening minds. While not everybody has a good experience at UArts (or any school, for that matter), and while I certainly believe that all opinions are valid, the concensus at my school is this:

Most of us didn't necessarily have the intention of going there. It's not a particularly well-known program, after all. But I can think of very few people who are unhappy that they came. Most of the people who leave the program leave because they realize that musical theater isn't what they want to do, not because they think the program sucks. When you actually experience the program, you realize the extreme merit of everything we do. The school is not perfect, but it's definitely unique. There is no other program like it in the United States, and I mean this in a very positive way.

Let me put it this way. I know two people who have had really awful experiences at CCM. Some of their friends have had bad experiences, too. I know at least four people who have had an awful time at NYU and I think I know one who's ever actually enjoyed an experience in Tisch. I make the choice not to judge a place based on the fact that I didn't experience the experience.

I urge you to please keep expressing your opinion and to please keep sharing the stories you've cultivated about any University and anything theatrical. But I please urge you to--while passing the stories on--try to keep an impartial eye open to what you're saying and what it could mean to other people. Say something like, "This was my friend's experience...," rather than, "UArts is a mediocre school because my friend had a bad time there." If you're passing a harsh judgment before you've experienced something, it's closing an opportunity for yourself and somebody else too.

Honestly, this thread was meant to be nothing more than a source of information for a program...and I understand you do not agree with me on that and thats totally fine.

I did NOT choose the wrong school, I chose the school that I felt would offer me the oppurtunity to develop to the max. of my potential. There are extremely talented kids in the program who chose to attend the school for the same reasons as I did and there are some students who transfered from some of the better established schools who found the program at UARTS to be a lot better for them in the long run.

I apologize for this thread getting way off topic and out of control.

If you dont have talent its not going to matter where you go. I lived accross the street from UofA for 8 years, and some of the talentless that came out of there was frightenting. Im not being mean, just realistic. If you have talent, you can go to community college and have a career. Every school has successful students to brag about, but that was because the school had something to work with, with that particular student. Bear in mind it costs about $25,000 a year to go to UA. As an actor the last thing I'd want to take to NY with me was a $50,000 student loan. People forget the great, old school actors did not go to college for the most part. They studied in NYC in studios with great teachers, they took a dance class every few days, and had vocal lessons, minus the $50,000 debt. Uof A is a business, they will take almost anyones money. Im not bashing the whole college thing, but be aware that it isnt the end all, be all. There are other options that arent nearly as costly.

A great big boo to everybody trying to insult this guy's choice of school and his education. whether he will enjoy it or not is his choice not yours. and i am not saying this as a uarts supporter, but as an education supporter. i dont care if you go to amda, circle in the square, or juilliard. (i kno actors who have attended all three who are successful)

to the naysayers: where do you people go to school? when is the last time you've had a job? please honeyu never discourage someone for getting an education because you kno somebody who knows somebody who had a bad experience.
