US Airways diverted over teffilin!?!?

Not quite Winston. There ceremony is just window dressing. You are bar or bat mitzvah regardless of whether you actually do anything about it.

" So what does it mean to become a bar mitzvah? Under Jewish Law, children are not obligated to observe the commandments, although they are encouraged to do so as much as possible to learn the obligations they will have as adults. At the age of 13 (12 for girls), children become obligated to observe the commandments. The bar mitzvah ceremony formally, publicly marks the assumption of that obligation, along with the corresponding right to take part in leading religious services, to count in a minyan (the minimum number of people needed to perform certain parts of religious services), to form binding contracts, to testify before religious courts and to marry.

A Jewish boy automatically becomes a bar mitzvah upon reaching the age of 13 years, and a girl upon reaching the age of 12 years. No ceremony is needed to confer these rights and obligations. The popular bar mitzvah ceremony is not required, and does not fulfill any commandment. It is certainly not, as one episode of the Simpsons would have you believe, necessary to have a bar mitzvah in order to be considered a Jew! The bar or bat mitzvah is a relatively modern innovation, not mentioned in the Talmud, and the elaborate ceremonies and receptions that are commonplace today were unheard of as recently as a century ago.

In Israeli the bar/bat mitzvah thing isn't nearly so overblown, though I've heard that lately they've been (unfortunately) importing the American tendency to turn it all into a huge, stupid party. Anyway, the last bar mitzvah I went to was in Israel and it was lovely - just the ceremony in the synagogue and then brunch for all the guests at a hotel. The kid's birthday party was a totally separate affair.

As for the matter of bat mitzvahs - the reason they're a relatively recent innovation is because in the ultra-Orthodox household, the division of labor is simple: Wife makes many babies and takes care of the household, Husband studies Torah and has all other religious duties. That's why women traditionally have fewer formal religious obligations, and why when today women try to take those on - standing at the bimah, praying out loud at the Western Wall - ultra-Orthodox (male) rabbis highly disapprove. Yay sexism!

At least that latent sexism made it easier for me to be non-observant as a kid without my more religious relatives really caring.

I am nearly 50 and girls were having their bat mitzvah ceremonies for quite some time at that point...and my family was conservative.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

US Airways diverted over teffilin!?!?

doesn't surprise me considering how so many Americans (and others) freak out by Muslims praying on a plane, or at an airport, or even someone in a burqua...
I mean France is close to outlawing wearing burquas....nothing surprises me anymore....this included.
It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story... AGATHA CHRISTIE, Life magazine, May 14, 1956
