re: Unisex Draft...Coming in May 2005?

When the draft was in place you were allowed to register as a 'conscientious objector' meaning you were morally opposed to fighting and killing and war.

So, basically anyone who has read and wisely took to heart ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT.

My information on Conscientious Objectors is old. My boyfriend in college applied to be a C.O. It was a very involved process which involved having to spell out his philosophy as to why he was against participating in any warfare...not just the Vietnam War...and prove that it was a consistent philosophy that had evolved over time. A panel reviewed his application and looked for consistency between what he had written and the life he had lived. He did receive CO status, but served out his time working in a hospital. The specific details have blurred over the years....this is how I remember it to have been. Being a CO is not easy to come by, and it certainly is not a free pass.

re: Unisex Draft...Coming in May 2005?

Methinks there's going to be a lot of brand new objectors when this happens.

Side note, when I was getting ready to graduate High School I happened to be in Annapolis for part of a school trip and I said to myself, I give these people so much credit. I could never be in the armed forces. I wish I could say that it would be possible. But in all honesty, I know I couldn't do it. I would be the worst soldier ever.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

re: Unisex Draft...Coming in May 2005?

I have severe asthma. So, more than likely I will never get drafted if it does come back. And I don't know why they are doing it. The reason they got rid of it to begin with was because it had so much oposition the first time around. It is my right whether or not I want to go to war or not. When the government decides for me, my right is taken away.

I'm not sure I made this point very well: just because someone wants to register as a Conscientious Objector does not mean that they will be allowed to do so. Just being opposed to *this* war is not going to easily make a winning case.

Someone PMed me this information and I thought I'd pass it along:

I've already e-mailed the Manhattan representatives for NYC. Have yet to hear back from them (this was a few hours ago), but their e-mails are:

Scott Stringer: strings@assembly.state.ny.us
Jonathan L. Bing: bingj@assembly.state.ny.us

Office postal addresses are:
DISTRICT OFFICE OF MANHATTAN
360 E. 57th Street
Mezzanine Level
New York, NY 10022
212-605-0937

ALBANY OFFICE
LOB 827
Albany, NY 12248
518-455-4794

If you Google "YOUR STATE Representatives," you should get a government website and from there can find out who your representatives are and contact them.

re: Unisex Draft...Coming in May 2005?

This is the first time I've heard such concrete news about a draft bill that made it sound like such a POSSIBILITY. I'm seriously extremely scared right now. I'm a 17-year-old female high school senior and I support anyone who has the strength and courage to join the armed forces, but it's just not something I could do. I have a brother who served in the army and another brother who is planning to join the Navy after he finishes college this spring. Despite the rampant fear I know I will feel when he goes (I was too young to understand the elder's position when he was in the army), I am so proud of both of them. Besides my conviction of my mental and physical inability to serve in the armed forces, there's also the idea of sending someone involuntarily into warfare that I just find repulsively immoral.

I have dreams and plans for my life. And I don't think my minor, rarely-occurring asthma is going to exempt me from any draft. My parents are very proud of my brother who served and my brother who plans to, but I know they wouldn't want me (or my third brother) to be forced to go against my will.

But if one supports the war effort, one should be willing to go fight it, no?

re: Unisex Draft...Coming in May 2005?

Sounds like this draft thing is a hoax. This website list a number of reasons why it won't happen. Main points are it is not economically smart for the military, it would decrease the quality of the military, the dual bills have been sitting in committee for almost two years now, among other issues.

Read yourself especially if you're nervous that this draft thing will happen. It won't, so don't worry.

I think it should be a person's choice as to how they involve themselves in the military.

re: Unisex Draft...Coming in May 2005?

Chill guys. There are still hundreds of thousands of military, reserves etc in the USA. I know alot of details about the draft issues because my Dad is a officer and I have one to many army friends in Iraq at the moment who have even told me it will never happen. Think about it in these terms: For a draft to happen the amount of people who have died in over a year at war (1,000) would have to be dying in combat EVERY DAY. In veitnam thousands were dying every few weeks for months, and that is why a draft was in effect. People always like to throw the term around at war time to get a rise. Just because there is talk of a vote happening means zilch. Relax

"Thank God for asthma"

In this situation, I say AMEN. Any other time, I would gladly give it to someone else.

re: Unisex Draft...Coming in May 2005?

Okay. I may have jumped the gun (how apt a phrase?) with the May 2005, but do the math, too. Are people still signing up for the reserves at the rate they did two or three years ago? Will they continue to do that as this war goes on and on and continues to get nastier? Maybe, but I'm guessing no. Should the US decided that there are other necessary wars that need to be fought, or should some other area of the world explode (pick your hot spot), the over-stressed resources will become even more over-stressed. The answer? Voila! There is a draft bill already in place.

So you can all breathe a temporary sigh of relief if you wish, but if I was 18 to 26, I wouldn't be looking in the other direction for very long. While it may not be as imminent as I originally stated, I still think the possibility of the draft is very real, and probably inevitable. I will be happy to be proven wrong, but having a child in the lower end of that age group, I'm *very* concerned.
