Posted: 4/18/07 at 11:11amI'm with Namo et al on this one. They're not that different than LaBute. And they're not that disturbing, at least not to me. (Full disclosure: I am not a fan of LaBute or this particular style of writing, but that doesn't mean I find it "disturbing.")

The only reason these writings are so disturbing is because now we know what the writer of them is capable of. I am a writer and I once wrote a story about a woman who heard a murder next door and was drawn into the aftermath. That doesn't mean I have the ambition to act out any violence that I have inside me. I think it's a safe bet we all have violence inside of ourselves, but not that many people act on it and certainly not in as grand a scale.
I get frustrated at the people who are now coming forward and saying, "Oh, something should have been done! Look at all the warning signs!" But what is there to be done? Nikki Giovanni had him kicked out of her writing class. Then he was privately tutored. The police were told of the "stalking" and harassing of students, but nothing had actually happened yet, so nothing could be done. He was reported to counseling on campus. It sounds to me like everything was done that could have been done. And, honestly, who would fathom that something like this could happen? Obviously, it can happen, but most of us would never believe that something as terrible as this would or could.

That movie sucked. I remember reading the book that it was "based on," Killing Mr. Griffin, when I was younger and it was so much better. I kind of doubt that's standard reading for youngsters anymore considering that was probably at least five or ten year before the whole Columbine thing.
And then there was Stephen King's (well, Richard Bachman's) Rage, which I loved at the time and I still think is amazing. It's pretty disturbing to read now, though, just because it sort of glorifies the killer. I doubt Steve would write something like that now.
