Strange that they are producing a sequel to this when the original isn't on Netflix.

It's on Canadian Netflix... (Yes, I just checked.)
But it may be a rights issue in the US or wherever you are. There have been other examples of something continuing and the original being owned by different people (Tales of the City comes to mind.)
