WHAT IF: A Gay Disney Animated Musical?
#1WHAT IF: A Gay Disney Animated Musical?

While I was skimming the deviantart.com website I came across an artist who does amazing Disney inspired art...some of it with a gay twist. I use to dream about how awesome it would have been as a kid to see something along the lines of The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast with a gay love story. Of course, this won't happen, at least not by Disney themselves in my lifetime, but still check out this guy's work. It makes you sigh a little at what could be in an ideal world.

Try 'The Lion King 1.5'. It's the only kiddy film about a gay couple raising a child I've ever seen.

Posted: 7/9/08 at 6:08pmI can't imagine Disney doing a gay animated film in our lifetime anyway, but I would hope that at some point the world will have evolved enough to where it would be acceptable.

haha, well if we are including villains and sidekicks...the QUEEN drag queen of them all is the Devine inspired Ursula. I find myself muttering her final quote "So much for true love" more often than I'd like.

Disney rarely , if ever, deals in the erotic.
Judging from that picture and your post, seems to me you are more interested something pretty to linger on and get off with. That is what porn is for.
Think about it: Did you ever see Belle in a thong while the Beast groped her yahoo?
No.
Why? Because part of Disney's success formula is to appeal to that part of ourselves that could feel love before sex factored in and complicated things.
It is a sweet time in our lives that Disney allows us to re-visit with their romantic films. Animated sex acts would make it something entirely different.
If Disney ever did a gay love story, I imagine they would handle it the same way they handle heterosexual love stories: with discretion, taste and an emphasis on romance.
In the meantime, if you REALLY are interested in spotting gay images in Disney films, read THE CELLULOID CLOSET by Vito Russo. It has an interesting section on the gay mice of CINDERELLA.

Posted: 7/9/08 at 7:14pmI remember a TV funhouse with very rauncy movies in the disney vault. One had Scar having sex with young simba. One had a very racist Uncle Remus singing "Zippe De Do Da"

Actually, BFB, NO! I am not looking for an animated feature to "get off on" Never said I was. You're suggestion that I go watch porn is extremely offensive to say the least. If you actually read my post I said "I use to dream about how awesome it would have been as a kid to see something along the lines of The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast with a gay love story." No where did I say I want to see Disney porn. So thank you, but NO THANK you for your little lecture.
Yes the artist's images that I linked to does have an erotic theme to them and I wouldn't want that or anything that would put the film past a PG rating. I was more praising the artist's ability to beautifully capture the STYLE of Disney animation and put a gay spin on it than saying I want a literal translation of HIS work in a Disney film. What inspired me to post his images, was that I have never seen any art work that even touches on a gay romance with the quality of art work we see in one of their animated films till now.

Seems I ruffled some feathers.
Ah well. I'm sorry if you took offense to my "lecture." But, really, dearest, between your avatar and the picture you posted it is hard NOT to come to the conclusion that you have more than a fleeting interest in sexualizing Disney. So thanks for the clarification.
So, again, if what I wrote HONESTLY offends you, I am deeply sorry.
If, however, you simply don't like gay anthropomorphic mice... that is really just your issue.

Posted: 7/9/08 at 8:27pmI think there will be a Disney movie with a gay character but he or she will be someone's single best friend or their unmarried aunt or uncle.

I think so too.
I never thought I'd see a Disney film with an interracial romance, yet we have POCAHONTAS (though they don't go so far as to get married).
I think in my lifetime I'll see a Disney animated character whose homosexuality is handle responsibly. I suspect the character will be so lovable and so kindhearted that any criticism will backlash on the critic.

Now I feel the need to watch Cinderella again.
I too would love to see a homosexual character handled in a responsible way by Disney.

How will we know they're gay then?
Haven't we already seen those questionable non-married kindly folk?
Steamy sexual behavior is one thing, and I agree Disney doesn't do that with any of their characters, but some obvious sexuality and/or romantic attraction would have to be shown... or we'll just keep getting those "cuddly old maids" and "kindly old bachelors" that we've already had for 50 years now.
