Sorry if I offended anybody ... when it comes to fighting for what is right, Itend to be very straight-forward. From personal/past experience, many people that I have encountered don't listen to calm and collected reasoning. There is so much cr@p in the world, you know, and I for one am dead sick of it.

From personal/past experience, riled up chatter, brow-beating, and insulting the intelligence of the audience you're trying to convince doesn't lead to productivity either. But if you lay off it we can reconsider.

OK, one, I am not saying that you "all" are ignorant on this topic, and two, sorry if this offends anybody, but anybody who shops at wal mart that can clearly afford to shop somewhere else and knows the beyond terrible practicesof the company "is" supporting what is morally and ethically wrong.

You can hate me; you can curse at me; you can do anything you want. There is so much d#mn crap in this world, and people need to start getting up off their a$#%^ and stand up for what is right instead of watching the world go by with rose-colored glasses and giving in.

No one is arguing against what you're saying, but how you're saying it. Your point (and a valid one at that) is becoming secondary to the unncessarily condescending and rant-like tone of your posts. It's a shame when such an important issue is lost under all the swearing and tirades. That's all.

I did defend myself on that point before ... I do have plenty of personal past experience with plenty of people not listening to cal and collected reasoning, you know? Only when people shout the truth an "force" others to listen; only then can we begin to make a change.

tmm_fan- Perhaps I missed it but I haven't seen anything you posted that expresses your frustration about something specific. Maybe we can identify or help you with your problem given that you express it in a proper and specific manner.

It seems all here on this thread agree with you to a certain extent. What they don't agree with is the "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!," which leads nowhere except to frustration.

First of all, you don't have to give us permission to hate you, curse at you or anything else. I don't think anyone here actually 'hates' you. I think some may be frustrated or angry but 'hate' is not only a strong word, but a difficult word to define.

Trust me, we all know that there is so much "d#mn crap in this world." Nobody I know is "sitting on their a$#%^" However, 'we the people' only have so much power. Proposing the idea that we are "watching the world go by with rose-colored glasses and giving in" is offensive to me.
There is a point where we can't do anything anymore. I'm sorry if you want us all to call *1800-FU-WALMART* and complain, but hunny- life doesn't work like that.

The fact is: There are MANY issues that need to be solved. Nobody is looking through rose-colored glass.

about the target/costco/tower thing... i worked at target when i was in high school and i didn't get benefits b/c i was a part-time (hourly) employee. however, full-timers did get benefits, our punchout system was extremely fair (it was a machine that they were very strict about everyone being honest about) and full-timers got hour preferences over us students... like thye were scheduled in first so if someone wasn't going to be getting as many hrs as desired it would be me over a full-timer. i think this was a good model because most people in my position were just working an afterschool job and didn't have needs to be met. also, while the entry-level pay was pretty ****ty ($7 an hr at the time) and that forced some to work the overnight stocking shift to make ends meet bc it paid $2/hr more, they gave internal promotions so people really did move up in the store ladder. one of my hs classmates that i worked with goes to college locally and so while he's been getting his BA he also moved up to managerial status at Target.

so yeah it's not a job I'd WANT to work F/T but they were decent for a big box store.

hmm see i disagree...
if you shout at people and try to force them to listen, thats not what is going to make a change.
in fact, that makes me just want to shop at walmart to spite you...ya know? shouting and trying to force me to do anything is not going to work. at all.

i just saw on the news animal activists yelling at people to stop eating meat. did that stop anyone? no. it just pissed them off.

and this is the same...saying people are ignorant and "feeding" into walmarts power...eh it just makes me not wanna listen to you.

That's interesting. Are any of these large chains union-ized?

There was a big controversy here in Vancouver about a Walmart that was going to open in one of the suburbs - not only was there anger from the locals about taking away from independent businesses, but the owners were refusing to make it unionized (which I believe some of the Walmarts - at least in Canada - are). So the Walmart proposal wasn't passed by a local committee and it won't be built.

yeah there was an article in nyt (i think) in the fall about how well costco treats their employees. the ceo doesnt take extra earnings, he pays workers an avg of over $17 an hr and gives them great benefits. the article states that stockholders werent happy about it but he didn't care... we need more ppl like him.

Honestly that was just stupid to read. But yeah Wal Mart is pretty evil and in my hometown in Wisconsin they built over a sacred Native American site so i wasn't to happy w/ Wal Mart

Trader Joes, which started in California, is also a non-union shop, but they treat their employees very well. Costco and Trader Joes both have very low turnover rates, which help contribute to overall cost savings.

And, as for the general scream about Wal-Mart being Evil . . .

Well, duh . . .

Where have you been for the past five years? There were some threads on this subject posted months ago. Costco and Target were brought up again as better options.

Note - Sam's Club is owned by Wal-Mart, so it is also evil.

And, some people have the resources to choose where they shop. Other's don't. I have never, by choice, shopped at a Wal-Mart for many reasons. But that is my decision. Other people on a strict budget do not have the same options.

Your reading comphrehension astounds me- just as this thread was starting to be substantive, you managed to lower its IQ by 40 points with your complaint about how "dumb" it is.

I've perused the site. Yes, it bashes Walmart, though it sounds more like a pro-union site than anything. I'm sure if you dug around, you could find similar dirt on virtually any major US corporation.

Well WalMart is the worst of the bunch. I avoid shopping there, but as a poor college student sometimes you have to just survive though. I do try to shop at Meijer instead. (Same size as a Wal-Mart Superstore except it pays fair wages, actually supports the local economy by buying from local farmers, and pumps tons of money into charities). It takes a couple of more minutes to get to, but it is definately worth it.

i've sat on the sidelines long enough watching the indiscriminate and overzealous use of these punctuation marks and the damage such usage does to our society.

i for one demand that the moderators limit the use of exclamation points before they drag this site into an incoherent screaming match. what's next? entire posts of all caps with absolutely no attention paid to spelling and or grammar? exclamation points are the beginning of the end when it comes to message board communities. they insiduously break down friendships and leave nothing but a shattered husk of a board in their wake.

beware these seemingly innocent punctuation marks and fight, fight, i say, the damage that they can cause by finding more coherent ways to make your points. use aggresive verbiage. use html tags to color your text. but don't fall back on the seemingly easy exclamation point. they are evil and must be destroyed.

As a New Yorker, I'm conditioned to hate Wal-mart. If they even try to go ahead with the proposed Union Square Walmart, I'm chaining myself to the potential space along with about a thousand other city folk.

That being said, I got my Rent DVD with Center Stage for 12.99 at Wal-mart. I just try not to think about the sweatshops.
