Folks, please sign this petition to the powers that be at Washington State University to bring back their theater program. It may not help, but you never know.

Terrible.

According to an article I read, the theater department cost the University $1.6 million over the course of 7 years (not per year).

Mike Leach, their football coach, pulls in over $3 million per YEAR.

It’s clear where this school’s priorities are, and it’s disgusting.

It is real very simple, athletics make the big money and help fund things at colleges. I don't like it either but it is reality that when schools cut costs, they always seem to look at arts programs first.

My youngest daughter went to Florida State University years ago and received 1/2 tuition dance scholarship which we really appreciated considering it cost over $30,000 a year (out of state). She had fantastic grades in HS and all her individual SAT score were over 700. Meanwhile, some 3rd string offensive tackle with grades not even close to my daughter got full scholarship - lol

If you're going to a school that has either a very well regarded basketball or football program (the two big college sports) then, sad to say, they would give the bigger scholarship to the athlete every time. Schools like Duke or UNC have major basketball programs and they recruit and bring in players who can help out with that same thing with a school like University of Alabama with their football program.

And, what makes this whole setup sad (beyond cutting arts first whenever a school needs to cut spending) is that student athletes and this big programs are given a bare bones education, just enough for them to technically be students, but, bring them in just to play. The NCAA makes tons of money (as do the schools) with games being on ESPN, player jerseys the whole nine. All the while, the athletes are doing all the work, get all the credit for winning. Yet, when there's tons of money being earned on their success, none of it goes to the students. I know some people who said it's sort of like slavery.

Well, no offense, but most theater graduates - like myself - live in debt. So it sucks, sure. but I can't blame them.
