Posted: 10/6/10 at 8:54pmIt's kind of stupid. I've been getting messages to do this for weeks now and I refuse to participate.
#31We know what you like on the couch (the bed, etc)

...but: why NOT participate?
Does it hurt anything?
It DOES draw awareness. The very fact that anyone even questions what it's all about draws awareness.
Does it raise money? Not directly. But, I don't believe that was the point.
The point was to spread a viral social network game that draws attention to something.
And it has.
Now, if you want to take it a step further, go ahead and link to a donation site, or share a personal experience, or do something else.
Or, don't participate if you don't want to.
But, by any of my logical measures, it's doing what it was meant to do.
And that just can't be a bad thing.

...I don't know if raising awareness for something is inane.
It's not the game I would have come up with. But, I didn't try. So... I'll play.

the message i got was slightly different than the one posted... it specifically mentioned that it was supossed to raise awareness for breast cancer. i kinda get how the bra color thing did a little bit because we all know that bras hold boobies... but what do handbags have to do with breast cancer? it seems to be more of "oh haha men are dumb lets confuse them. girl power!" than anything else.
-----------------------
OK ladies here's a game, like the bra color game which was a total success and raised tons of awareness for breast cancer and we had men wondering for days what was with the colors and it made it to the News. Well this game has to do with your handbag, where we put our handbag the moment we get home for example "I like it on the couch", "I like it on the kitchen counter", "I like it on the dresser" well u get the idea. Lets see how many people we can get talking about breast cancer this time! Just put your answer as your Status with nothing more than that and cut n paste this message and forward to all your FB female friends to their inbox. The bra game made it to the news. Let's see how powerful we women really are!!! REMEMBER - DO NOT PUT YOUR ANSWER AS A REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE. LET'S RAISE SOME AWARENESS, LADIES!

ps - I don't read anything about 'men are dumb' in that message.
I read about awareness. And getting people talking. A game. And making news.
I'd say it's working.
PRS started a thread about it...
Awareness. It's important.

Posted: 10/6/10 at 10:39pmwhat i dont get tho, is the connection. why handbags? who was sitting there thinking "hmmm... we need to raise awareness for breast cancer... i know! lets make where we put our handbags sound really dirty so that it has absolutly nothing to do with cancer! we'll all sound like sluts! cool!"

The point isn't handbags. Or bras.
It's getting people to notice something. And start talking. And raising awareness.
Next year it could be about refrigerators...
Whatever raises awareness is what matters.
And now you're very aware that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Hopefully people will do something about it. But, even being aware is a good thing.

i'm also aware that it's spina bifida awareness month, vaccine injury awareness month, disability employment awareness month, depression education and awareness month and GLBTQ history month... and looking at recent events, maybe those last two should be the ones being talked about.
anyone who leaves their house is aware that it's breast cancer awareness month. it's become more of a fashion statement than anything else. pink kitchenaide mixers and grill sets are cute, but i doubt every time someone mixes a cake or grills a burger they're going to think "oh, this is for breast cancer awareness"

I can't voice a complaint against breast cancer awareness month.
The current awareness levels are the result of many, many years of hard work and many people being dedicated to the cause.
There are MANY worthy causes. This is just one of them.
Participate in whatever way you choose. Or don't.

I guess, to me (just to me, I'm not trying to speak for anyone else), raising awareness has something more behind it than once a year participate in a cryptic but really cryptic Facebook meme.
The intention is good, I'm sure, if a little superficial. All the explanations I've seen (which all seem to be cut and pasted from the same email)doesn't say anything about how this raises awareness, just that this will raise awareness by keeping men "literally" (not my choice of words) in the dark.
Most people are aware of breast cancer. Is there inadequate funding for breast cancer research? That would be good information to spread, if that were the case. Or how women can give themselves exams - what to look for, how to do it, etc.
I mean, I know this information, but it seems to me that most of the women on Facebook doing the awareness raising aren't even that aware themselves. I keep looking to see what the women on Facebook are saying or posting next, but it seems to me that most have moved on already.
So again, I'm not trying to sh*t all over what apparently is great fun for womankind. I'm just genuinely wondering how this is spreading awareness. And what kind of awareness people are trying to spread. And no one really seems to know.

I don't think anyone thinks this is the end-all and be-all for breast cancer research, funding, awareness, etc.
It's just a way to get people talking.
I also hope that there is some kind of action taken a a result of this awareness. Which is why I participate in what are, for me, more worthwhile causes.
But, whatever anyone wants to do to participate is fine with me.

...ps: I personally think it's a stupid game.
But, I don't have a problem with anyone playing it.

Um... what happened to the 'edit message' button?
I wanted to go back and edit what I just wrote, to add a little more texture. But, all I can do is reply to myself.
EDIT - I logged out and logged back in and now I can edit...
so, nevermind!

I hate this meme so much. But it's been phrased better elsewhere:
How is this raising awareness? Or more importantly, who the **** isn't aware of breast cancer by now? We don't need to be raising awareness that it exists. We need to raise awareness about self examinations, mammograms, or places where we can donate money. That will actually save lives. How is posting a cryptic facebook status update that's purposefully meant to confuse people saving the lives of people who suffer from breast cancer?
Because it isn't meant to raise awareness or save lives. The point of this is to titillate. Now, I'm not going to pretend I'm above juvenile humor - I just made a post giggling at naughty sounding scientific words. But this is even bellow all of the "I Heart Boobies" t-shirts - even though those reduce survivors to their breasts, at least they actually raise money for research, treatment, and prevention.
