You don't have to have it with seaweed. I always get the types mixed up, but I think nigirizushi basically consists of a mound of rice with a piece of fish on top, and maybe wasabi in between. They
might be tied together with a strip of seaweed, but you can always get rid of that.
You'll want to avoid handrolls (tamekizushi?), because they're always wrapped in seaweed. And the small rolls you probably had (makizushi, I think) are usually wrapped in seaweed, too, but some types aren't. So if you're offered handroll, roll, or sushi, take the sushi. :) Or sashimi, which is raw or cooked fish served with no rice- just a dipping sauce.
