Democrat Governor Patterson gave New Yorkers an early Christmas present by taxing everything that moves. I'm sure he's also trying to find a way to tax the air we breathe.

Ugh, i hate agreeing with Goth, but someone needs to tell ole Patty to go **** himself with that budget.
ETA
That same person should go tell the MTA to **** themselves with the doomsday plan. I'm not paying $100+ for monthlies because you've had your head up your ass for 2 decades.

The problem with some of these taxes is that it will be a permanent price hike on some items. For example, soda is now $1 a can. Let's say the tax makes it $1.25. If that tax ever gets repealed, store owners won't return to the original price, they'll just keep charging the $1.25. So this is a permanent price hike.

Umm let's not panic YET. It hasn't passed. And to be honest. I wouldn't think most if not all of it WILL. As the article states, it would drive people to shop elsewhere and NYC can't afford that right now. Especially right now.
Not to mention -the same proposal is cutting $$ for education. Never a popular thing - especially in NY where (at least in the city) - they are already strapped for resources.
It's important to be aware of the goings on - but I wouldn't say it's a done deal

Posted: 12/17/08 at 10:14amwell its nice to see you're so confident craig, but for the rest of us, that are forced to live beyond our means by the current cost of living don't have that luxury.

Posted: 12/17/08 at 10:19amNo. I just know from personal experience and from others that 90 percent of stress and panic one feels are about things that havne't happened or don't happen. It's not about being confident nor about any financial situation I'm in. The original poster started the thread as if this was already a done deal - signed, sealed and delivered. I'm merely suggesting to take a deep breath and watch the situation as it develops rather than submitting to doomsday emotions.

The bad thing is they are taxing all the pleasures in life. I'm sure that Broadway will be hit by these taxes. Movies, soft drinks, ipod music, cable tv. They really want to make sure there are no pleasures in life.
And not that I want to see anyone lose their job, but 521 terminations in a state as big as NY seems rather small.

Hurl your insults while you can. When the internet is run like a 900 number, it'll cost you $4.95 a minute so you better learn to type fast.

AOL already tried that, it didn't work.

Pearls before swine.
(that makes no sense in this context, but I've always wanted to use that phrase in a conversation)

Interesting that your signature line fits right into this conversation. Rep companies don't work in NYC because it's too expensive to maintain one. Why is it too expensive to maintain one? Because NY is a very expensive place to live and conduct business because of its taxes.

He's talking about taxing cable tv, music downloads, reinstating the tax on clothing, besides charging more for transit and giving us less service. And the tax on soda will only be for non-diet sodas. WTF?
Let's see what happens

Posted: 12/17/08 at 4:15pmLaugh, Namo, but it's coming. I know it is because my aunt sent that to me in an email forward, right between the news about the proposed legislation that will adopt an "Amero" by March 30 and a list of musings from George Carlin about how the Mexicans have destroyed this country.

Posted: 12/17/08 at 6:22pmI heard Obama is annexing Mexico, Belize and Guatemala and changing the name of the countries to the Communist Republic of American Peoples. That's right. We're going to be known around the world as CRAP. But don't blame Obama. Blame everyone who voted for Obama. It's like Y2K all over again, but for real this time.
