Welp, kids, I has the mono!

After weeks of waking up feeling like crap in the morning and progressing into the afternoon feeling even worse, I finally went to the doctor once I had a head cold that I couldn't ignore. After a strep test that came back negative, they proceeded to take my blood (much to my dismay...I am the biggest wimp when it comes to needles, blood, etc.) and confirmed what I have thought all along...
My promiscuity has caught up with me and I have been diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis. I went this past Monday and have felt like death ever since. Today's been better - I have my energy back a tad and I was able to eat a whole sandwich. But you guys, this is AWFUL! I think the throat is the worst part. But anyways, my doctor put me on steroids to reduce the swelling of my lymph nodes and throat.
So, to help me with my pain I thought I would open the floor to anyone who wants to discuss their time with mono. Any remedies you guys have to soothe the symptoms? I know you can't "cure" mono, only help to ease the symptoms. Thanks for all your help and can't wait to hear =)

I had a mono. Then I got some tweezers and did some plucking and now I totally have two eyebrows like any normal girl.
Sorry to hear you're poorly. I know nothing about the easing of symptoms, but I hope you feel better as soon as possible.

Don't share water bottles or kiss anyone else. Sleep well and hard. Gargle salt water. Take advil. Have as little activity as possible. (My slutty friends always get mono this time of year; normally the mono season ends right about now).

I do hope you guys know I was kidding about the promiscuity, lol
as much as I would love to brag and say I got this from kissing someone but I really dont think that is the case. My friends and I are always sharing drinks and stuff.

That's how I got it three years ago, Willact. I actually felt cheated. If I'm going to get an infectious disease, why can't I get it the fun way?
I had it at the same time as Lyme and a sinus infection. Blah.
All I can say is rest. Rest as much as possible, and drink lots of water. I know its boring. I spent that whole summer in bed. But its better than your heart failing, right? Right!

Well, that is good - sometimes humor or context is hard to catch on the board.
So as to my prior comment... nevermind!

When I went to bed last night, I thought the steroids were finally helping and my throat was beginning to feel better. I wake up this morning and it couldn't be further from that. Ugh, it hurts so bad.
My energy isn't too bad. I'm definitely taking it easy today. I just wish this nasty throat pain would go away! It almost feels like when I had strep...

Well, Shikobit has the right idea. Sorry you're not feeling well.
I caught it somehow first semester freshman year of college, many years ago. I had had my first boyfriend that summer prior but had been away from him for nearly 2 months by the time I started feeling sick and went to the doctor at school. To this day I never knew how I caught it, as I had not kissed anyone at school by that time! I was convinced that it must have been airborne on one of those hot, cramped, campus buses or something.
Anyway, I fortunately didn't have as severe throat pain that you had, but I did have englarged, gooky tonsils and felt weird tenderness behind my ribs, as your spleen and liver can become enlarged. All my roommate's friends were regaling me with horror stories of their versions of mono from high school and I was so paranoid, I was afraid to turn over in my sleep, lest my ribs rupture my spleen! Silly me, but I went back to the doctor 3 times to make sure I was handling it right.
He gave me the steroids to bring the inflammation down and basically said: eat healthy, drink fluids, gargle with salt water, and the most important thing, SLEEP whenever you feel the slightest bit tired. Don't push yourself or it will take longer to go away. My fever went down in a few days and I made sure to sleep a lot for about 2 weeks and then I felt that my bout with mono was over. The good thing was, it sort of set my tone for making sure I got all my food groups in my meals at the beginning of college, and also helped me make sure I got my rest intead of screwing off. He recommended I didn't work out for the rest of the semester to avoid a possible relapse, though.
So just give yourself a break from lots of physical activity, tell your friends you need to take it easy for a few months. Your body was obviously run-down and needs rest (they used to call it the "kissing disease" but obviously it's contagious in more ways than that. It's not just from kissing anymore). Give it that and you'll recover nicely and get back to your old self in no time. Feel better!

Thanks for all the well wishes guys! Today has been alright - woke up with a very sore throat, but just gargled some salt water which relieved it some. Today my ears are especially clogged and stuffy. I poured some hydrogene peroxide in them so loosen them up. It seemed to help one of the ears, but not the other very much. Oh well.
I think I'm going to be making another trip to the doctor either tomorrow or Tuesday. The steroids don't seem to be helping my throat or lymph nodes and I'm a little concerned.
