Yes, Ellie, it's a "modern-dress" version of R&J where the feuding families became fighting gangs on the streets of NY.

Yes...I played Baby John..my first role. That show and that part will always mean so much to me. I even had bruises from it..LOL !!!! If I find a picture from that production I'll post it.

M_E George Chakiris actually played "Riff" in the London stage production...he was then cast as "Bernardo" in the movie. Interesting huh?

Some of it was. There are actually shots that jump whole neighborhoods. Like when they are playing basketball in the prologue, they are suddenly at a playground in East Harlem.

the film version of "America" was much STRONGER and SHARPER than the stage version's.

Rita Moreno's dress was purple with fringes around the waist....Natalie Wood's dress was white with a red sash around her waist......
