I've never seen it. It's based on Romeo and Juliet, right?
Thanks M_E..this was the first show I ever did when I was a freshman in High School. Can you guess what part I played???
Yes, Ellie, it's a "modern-dress" version of R&J where the feuding families became fighting gangs on the streets of NY.
Boobs, I'm sure you were a lovely Anita (much too flat-chested to play Maria). :)
This was my first live show to see...what memories...
Actually M_E..I batted for the other team. Hint: I was the youngest in the show.
Oh... "Baby John."
My, how appropriate. ::winks::
Yes...I played Baby John..my first role. That show and that part will always mean so much to me. I even had bruises from it..LOL !!!! If I find a picture from that production I'll post it.
Tony's about to sing "Something's Coming."
Oooooh---Natalie Wood!!!
(And that's Oscar-Winning Rita Moreno!)
George Chakiris (Bernardo) also played the part in the London Stage Version.
... that's John Astin as "Glad Hand"--better known as Gomez Addams on The Addams Family.
Jerome Robbins won a Special Oscar for his choreography.
Robbins started his career cheoreographing ballets.
No mention of Russ Tamblyn??? Step it up, M.E.
M_E George Chakiris actually played "Riff" in the London stage production...he was then cast as "Bernardo" in the movie. Interesting huh?
...Film was actually filmed on the streets of the West Side.
Some of it was. There are actually shots that jump whole neighborhoods. Like when they are playing basketball in the prologue, they are suddenly at a playground in East Harlem.
and as usual Mary_Ethel ignores me...oh well... keep on posting incorrect info
. or re-check your Musical Theatre encyclopedia....
the film version of "America" was much STRONGER and SHARPER than the stage version's.
it was also alot BIGGER! it was shot with 70mm Panavision lenses...LMAO
Speaking of East Harlem, the alcapurria rocks at La Isla.
Rita Moreno's dress was purple with fringes around the waist....Natalie Wood's dress was white with a red sash around her waist......
and OMG...this JUST IN....Natalie Wood IS NOT, I repeat IS NOT:
*gasp*
PUERTO RICAN!!!!
*faints*
