Yes, Laurents is mean. Robbins was no prince either.
Well, Margo, maybe he was cast because he could do that cool gate trick.
:-p
i've had my fill of media noches..they're aiight...
In the stage version, the ballad "Somewhere" was part of an idealized ballet of the Jets and Sharks getting along--which was not used in the film version.

No coquis were harmed in the filming of West Side Story.
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! magruder that was priceless!!!
In the film version, "Cool" is sung AFTER the rumble; in the stage version, it is sung BEFORE the rumble.
and did I NOT already mention that the damn ballet was planned and storyboarded and eventually abandoned..you're thirty five posts too late with that info Mary_Edna...
but that's okay.. YOU still think Chakiris played Bernardo in the London stage production don't you?
and "COOL" was actually sung by RIFF in the stage version and Tucker Smith who actually sings it in the film version DUBBED Russ Tamblyn in "The Jet Song" so in reality Tucker Smith sings TWO songs in the film.
Rita Moreno was originally offered the role of "Anita" in the original stage version of "WSS" by Robbins who met her during the filming of "The King & I", prior film commitments didn;t allow Moreno to do the stage show. but Robbins made up for his loss on stage by casting Moreno in the movie version. she was the first one cast in the film. The character of 'Ice' (who just lead "Cool") is NOT in the stage version.
WEST SIDE STORY would have been more authentic if they would have showed the Sharks chowing down some authentic arroz con gandules, chuleta and tostones....
Although Rita Moreno won a Supporting Actress Oscar for WSS--she fell victim to the "Oscar Curse" and couldn't get a decent part for many years thereafter.
You bring knives. We bring knives. You bring chuletas. We bring tostones.
she then went to London and won slammin reviews for her portrayal in a revival of "The Miracle Worker" not to mention her performance in the London version of "She Loves Me"...
LMAOOOO @ magruder!!!! i just pee'd in my pants!
WSS' Anita taking a message to Tony for Maria is a parallel of R&J's the Nurse taking a message to Romeo for Juliet.
the soundtrack to West Side Story is one of the most succesful albums recorded in history
See, if the Jets and Sharks just settled down for a meal at La Isla at 104th and 3rd Avenue, Tony would be alive today.
Mary_Edna the WHOLE DAMN THING is a PARALLEL to ROMEO and JULIET!!
In the stage version, "Anita's Taunting" was done to "America" background music.
oh yes i agree magruder, i also think a song should have been sung completely in spanish.
in spanish speaking countries "WEST SIDE STORY" is known as "AMOR SIN BARRERAS"
Translation: "LOVE WITHOUT BARRIERS"
That is the MAIN difference in the plots of WSS and R&J:
In R&J, both lovers are dead by the end.
In WSS, the female lover is still alive.
The stage version of West Side Story was a favorite of New York's gay community due to the Sharks wearing very tight jeans.
LMAO......did you also know that tony mordente is several inches shorter than chita rivera.
