In honor of Ingmar Bergman's passing.
In no particular order:
INLAND EMPIRE (Lynch, 2006) - The ultimate Lynch film. Every image, every theme, every plotline finally comes to the highest possible boil. Watching this film on the big screen was one of the greatest moments of my life and that is not hyperbole.
NASHVILLE (Altman, 1975) - Simultaneously the most brutal and the most beautiful love letter to the human spirit in general and the American way in specific. It's an amazing piece of cinema.
PERSONA (Bergman, 1966) - The single most powerful film ever made. I struggle for the right words to say about this masterpiece. Only two words bubble up to the surface of my brain: See it.
Schindler's List
The Color Purple
All About Eve
Edit: I have to qualify those as my favorite dramas. I find it difficult to mix drama, musicals and comedies (maybe a cop out).
Musicals: Sound of Music, West Side Story, Singin in the Rain
Comedies: Auntie Mame, Arsenic and Old Lace, My Cousin Vinny

I saw it when I was nine! My classmates and I were tingling in anticipation for a week before it opened. We were all obsessed. When the Saturday matinee finally rolled around, the movie house in our town had to open its balcony, which is something none of us had ever seen before. It was one of the most ecstatic afternoons of my childhood.

People don't just open up their balcony for anything that comes along, you know.
We had a theatre in town with an on-again-off-again balcony as well! And House of Dark Shadows played there. I can't remember if it was a "balcony" movie or not. It's just been too long.
BUT... I remember (and I kid you not), they gave out glow-in-the-dark plastic ghosts (or was it vampires?)... about 4 inches tall. I thought that was SO cool, and I kept mine for ages. I have no idea where it is now, though.
