Marymount Manhattan College! Yes, please.
Professional Performing ARts School (PPAS). The BEST school ever. It's a high school in times square for professional teen performers and some aspiring performers go there as well... I love it... in terms of college though, I'm looking to get out of the city... none of the colleges here impress me, especially NYU. Some (not all, so don't get offended) of the talent accepted at CAP21 and other Tisch programs is a joke and they reject some VERY talented people. Understanding that this is a university and not a conservatory, Tisch doesn't make its program "elite" enough to feel a sense of accomplishment upon graduation it seems. Anywho... yeah I'm pretty much looking at Michigan or CCM. Both great schools wih more success stories than Tisch or Pace or anything else in the city I'm looking to get out of... how about you?

I'm not in CAP21 but in another Tisch studio but, in any case, no offense taken. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, regardless of how uninformed they happen to be.
Your comments about conservatory vs. university really are a little bit off, because although, obviously, NYU is a university, Tisch's training is as much a conservatory as any total conservatory experience. The advantage is that you also have the opportunity to avail yourself of the many advantages of being part of a large, well-respected university. The benefit of that is the reason that many of us are able to double major.
In terms of how 'elite' it is, the selectivity is fairly equal among all of the top programs; NYU, UM, CMU, CCM, OCU, Syracuse, Ithaca, Penn State, etc. At Tisch, there are generally in the range of 3000 who audition each year, with around half of those who specify CAP21 as their primary studio choice. Tisch, overall, enrolls approximately 300 with 60 or so of those going to CAP21. So, although it's true that it's the largest drama program in the country, they have more applicants than the other programs, thus still making it as selective.
Tisch is not for everyone, there's no question about that. That's why it's important for kids to research lots of programs, visit, and then select a list where they feel they can be happy, in addition to having a range of programs, in terms of reach, match, safety (kind of an oxymoron in MT programs). There will be a range of abilities at every college program. I have friends at almost every drama program across the country because I went to an arts h/s where a lot of the kids have pursued it into college.
Every college has produced talented and successful performers, both in NYC and regionally. While it's interesting to look at the alumni, and Tisch certainly has a large number of very successful working actors, playwrights, directors, designers, etc., that really shouldn't be the main focus in your decision making as to where to apply. The fact is that most people in this business have NO college degree but that doesn't mean that we should all just forget college and start auditioning. We all need to find the school which offers what we're looking for, in the location we're looking for, which has a good reputation in the business side of the theatre world, and which we have a reasonable chance of being accepted into (probably most importantly).
Good luck with CCM and UMich (not, btw, a conservatory any more than Tisch is
). Where else are you applying?
idk... probably carnegie mellon, northwestern, ccm, umich, and i will probably apply to tisch as a fallback which i hear is a "stupid" idea because everyone says it's a great school so it should be a first choice but w/e...
kind of busy to worry about college stuff now, i still have another year and i just got a role in an off-broadway show the other day so i'm like gahhh... thanks for your feedback, a lot of it was helpful.

I'm still in HS but I want to go to either Hunter, Marymount Manhattan, Pace, or NYU Steinhardt.
I go to Sarah Lawrence...right outside NYC...
How do you like it, Ado Annie?

luvthemc: i love sarah lawrence. it's one of the only places that has actually motivated me to do my work and work harder.
I also go to Barnard. I graduate in 2007, and I'll be so sad when that day comes.

So Tisch people... that is absolutely my dream school of all dream schools... I'm hoping to apply to Drama next year (I'm a junior). In the way of studio training, do they place you in a studio, or do you choose? I really like the sound of Playwrights' Horizon, though CAP 21 sounds neat too...
Also, (and don't answer this if its uncomfortable; I'm just curious), how do you manage the money? I live in CA, so travel expenses will be up, but I'm really really worried about the $43,000 price sticker. Ouch. Twice as much as any of the other schools my family'd like me to go to...

Penny4Eyes-I know someone who used to go to PPAS. What grade are in?
Manhattan School of Music - Voice major
We have almost all the same voice faculty as Juilliard with some others who are absolutely fabulous. It is also just 6 blocks north of Columbia.
