Not if the word is used hatefully, dogs. Like faggot or the n word, queer has whatever power the user chooses to give it, imo.
It depends on who's using it and how they are using it.

The use of any word that is coopted gives the coopter the power to choose to be hurt or to be humored by a slur.
i.e., I can laugh or cry at someone who calls me "queer"...however, words that haven't been coopted don't get that availability.

Posted: 3/5/07 at 2:36pmWords are negotiated meaning. They have no power in and of themselves. We choose to give something power. The speaker can intend to give a word power, but in the end, no power is weilded because the meaning was not successfully negotiated.

Perhaps, doodle, but I'd much rather be called queer than fag--not that either bothers me any more--you gotta be WAY more creative with your insults if you want to make me mad. Fag/queer/picklechugger, etc...just don't upset me anymore--unless the words are accompanied with baseball bats.

It's not okay for me on principal...I also dont like to hear the n word used in any way.
It doesnt just matter how I feel, but also how that person who may be more sensitive to it might feel...and what that may do to them.

I don't like the N word either, but I don't call out strangers either.
We'll always have assholes and idiots...but I think getting mad only makes them happy.
And after you've had "FAG" written many times and all over your locker in high school, getting called a queer kinda pales...

ooo...luckily, I went to Christian high school, so all I got was "Sodomite" written on my locker.
And, a crapload of guilt.
And, a Christian boyfriend.
And, last month, a thing of McDonald's fries thrown at me and my male friend (straight) who had his arm around me. The thrower said, "We don't need none of that faggot stuff in here". My friend and I laughed so hard that I think he turned gay.

I know, doodle, but it kinda stands to reason that if you don't like queer, you're not going to be fond of N either.
And you gotta ignore some of these people--anyone who has nothing better to do than to assume the sexual orientation of strangers needs either a hobby, a lobotomy or a butt plug.

It means everything from "odd" and "questionable" to "mentally deranged" and "unstable."
I've never embraced the word "queer" for my orientation. It's fine if others want to. That's their choice, just as it's my choice to reject it. Since it comes from such negative origins, I'm not comfortable with using it.
It leaves me feeling queer inside.

My feeling is that it's all hatespeech and, tho it's everyone's right to use these words, that doesnt make it good.
and that I disagree that using these words diffuses their hateful meanings.
