What Takes The Oscar For Best Picture
re: What Takes The Oscar For Best Picture#25

Posted: 2/14/08 at 12:56pmMy vote is for No Country For Old Men followed by There Will Be Blood. But if you review the last decade or two of Best Picture winners, the likeliest choice by the Academy is Atonement. It's the safest choice.

But ATONEMENT has little support. All of the other ATONEMENT-like films that won the Oscar had better reviews and slews of support. So far, ATONEMENT's only support comes from the HFPA and the British Academy.
I'm reviewing the last 2 decades of the Oscar, and there are only a few instances where a grand, sweeping epic like ATONEMENT won.
The ones that won were considered frontrunners and have the support of RAVE reviews.

I just got finished watching No Country and I loved it! I loved everything about it except the ending left me wondering a little bit. But so far, out of the four nominated films I saw, I like this the best.
I forgot to mention that Bardem's character reminded me a little of Ted Levine's Jaime Gumm. And they both seemed to have their voices electronically altered.

Posted: 2/16/08 at 12:22pmThe only one I missed was MICHAEL CLAYTON. I'm seeing BLOOd tonight. My favorite was ATONEMENT so far. I liked JUNO.

No Country will win. It's got too much momentum now.
But I'm hearing a lot of people out here, while they LOVE Julie Christie's work in Away From Her, are actually voting for Marion Cotillard.
I have a hunch Marion's gonna take Best Actress now. I don't know if that would be considered a minor upset or not, since they're both front-runners.
My latest predictions (not final):
Picture - No Country
Director - Coen Bros.
Actor - Day-Lewis
Actress - Cotillard
Supporting Actor - Bardem
Supporting Actress - Cate Blanchett
Screenplays - Juno & No Country
By the way, I just saw Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and anyone who says Cate Blanchett wasn't deserving of that Best Actress nomination hasn't seen the film. She's magnificent in it, and if it were her first time playing this role I think she'd WIN the award hands down. I was surprised it was that good and that strong of a turn. Hardly a rehash of her work in the first film. If others in the Academy feel as I do, I could see giving her the edge in that (very tough) Supporting category. She's such a marvel in both films. The best actress of her generation, bar none. And for those who say "nobody saw her work as Dylan" I beg to differ. DVD screeners level the playing field. Everyone who voted for the acting awards has it. That's not going to play into their decision or the outcome at all.

Blanchett was thrilling in "I'm Not There", but I'd much rather see the award go to Saoirse Ronan for what is possibly the most chilling performance I have ever witnessed by a young actress. Remarkable.
Maybe Dee, Blanchett, and Ryan will split the votes, leaving Ronan to peek through with a win. That'd be a shocker. And I know the chances are slim-to-none.
And yes, Blanchett's performance in "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" was commendable, but that nomination should have gone to either Helena Bonham Carter, Amy Adams, or Kerri Russell, all of whom were more deserving.

Well, I couldn't sit through the whole of There Will be Blood. It was just so dreary, bleak, depressing and slow moving that I was falling asleep. I saw about half of it.
I still favor No Country for best picture, and Bardem for supporting actor. Maybe some other awards too. I loved the cinamatography and art direction. Of course, the Coens.

Posted: 2/17/08 at 9:33pmb12, I'm surprised that you are predicting Blanchett to win. I can't see that happening.

Just saw Blood & have to pick it over Old Men.
It is a better all around picture & Lewis will definitely get the Oscar - IMO.
