What Takes The Oscar For Best Picture#1

Have seen Old Men & Atonement. Hope to see Blood this weekend

So far, I think Old Men will win it with Bardem coping the Oscar for Supporting actor in what has to be one of the best villains in screen history.

I really won't mind if THERE WILL BE BLOOD wins but I am rooting for ATONEMENT.

I think this year's Oscars is going to be pretty predictable...maybe a surprise for Best Supporting Actress (Ruby Dee wins a la Alan Arkin).

I think it's going to go as follows:
PICTURE: No Country
DIRECTOR: Coen brothers
ACTOR: Daniel Day Lewis, TWBB
ACTRESS: Julie Christie, AFH
SUPP. ACTOR: Bardem, NCFOM
SUPP. ACTRESS: Ryan, GBG
SCREENPLAY (ADAPTED): NCFOM
SCREENPLAY (ORIGINAL): Juno

Would love to see Juno win Best Picture though. It deserves it.

My vote definitely goes to "No Country for Old Men." If I had my way, my vote would be for Wickedrocks' avatar or the masterful "Diving Bell and the Butterfly."

Props Wickedrocks! It really is a masterpiece.

No Country For Old whatever...

The movie doesn't make sense. None of Llewelyn's (Josh Brolin's) actions make any sense. The title doesn't make any sense. AND the ending doesn't make any sense.

A sure winner!

I'm hoping for TWBB, but it will be NCFOM that wins and I'm fine with that because it is, along with TWBB, a masterpiece.

I would love to see ATONEMENT take it, it is a beautifully made film and lasted in my mind for days....NCFOM, well, another beautifully made film, it should win for the Coen brothers as Directors, but the film left me puzzled. More questions then answers...the ending was really a big question in my mind. I couldn't believe it was over. I am sure NCFOM will win for Film, Directing and Javier for his outstanding performance, but not the Best film in my mind...that would be Atonement.

My vote goes to Atonement. And I do not think the Oscars are predictable this year at all, seeing how it hasn't been the same films getting the same awards. Perhaps for Supporting Actor maybe, but I am hoping that it will not be predictable and that each category will be filled with surprises...heres to dreaming!

I just can't believe that nobody looks at NCFOM, and laughs at the implausibility of Josh Brolin's (Llewellyn's) actions and their consequences.

We watch him do the weirdest incidental things and make the stupidest decisions in that movie, none of which make sense logistically, and none of which have realistic outcomes (that whole trip down to Mexico and back)... and yet it all works out the way it does. Ambiguously.

Okay.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's a really weak piece of writing, with some terrific performances, excellent cinematography, terrible story-telling, and a lot of prefabricated gritty style.

EDIT: And yet I think it's going to win... largely because of all the Starbucks film critics out there, and their "edgy" trendy bandwagon, who have helped spin this ambiguous straw into gold.

I'm going to the AMC marathon the day before the Oscars. You can see all the Best Picture nominees (plus you get unlimited popcorn) for $30. It's going to be 12 hours of ridiculous. I'm amped.

I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

THERE WILL BE BLOOD or NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

To tell the truth, I would be happy for any film but JUNO. All the Oscar-bait movies were really good this year.

With any luck, No Country will be the deserving winner.

However, I have a growing feeling that Atonement will sweep the technicals, Ronan will pull a surprise win in supp. actress, and the film will BP. Then again, that's little more than a feeling...

* = surfire lock

Predictions...
Picture: No Country (upset: Atonement)
Director: Coen's*
Actor: Day-Lewis*
Actress: Christie (upset: Cotillard)
Supp. Actor: Bardem*
Supp. Actress: Dee (upset: anyone's game)
Org. Screenplay: Juno*
Adpt. Screenplay: No Country (upset: Atonement)

My choices...
Pic: No Country
Director: Coen's
Actor: Day-Lewis
Actress: Christie
Supp. Actor: Holbrook
Supp. Actress: Swinton
Org. Screenplay: Michael Clayton
Adpt. Screenplay: No Country

I don't think ATONEMENT will sweep any technical nods.

ELIZABETH is the frontrunner for costumes.
SWEENEY TODD is the frontrunner for art direction.
THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES is the frontrunner for cinematography.

It's not nominated for either Editing or Director - which makes it nearly impossible to win best picture.

Ronan doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the the supporting actress category.

And while Julie Christie is the sure-fire frontrunner, her competition isn't Cotillard at this point - it's Ellen Page. In fact, I'm thinking of changing my prediction from Christie to Page.

I'd love for TWBB or Atonement to will, but I have a gut feeling that No Country will take it. I don't think Michael Clayton or Juno stands much of a chance of winning.

I thought that Juno was a fun movie, but I don't think it deserved a BP nomination. IMHO, Into The Wild, The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, Sweeney Todd, or Ratatouille should have been nominated in Juno's place. It certainly deserved it's Best Original Screenplay nod, but Jason Reitman certainly didn't deserve a Best Director nod as the direction was really nothing special, and I can think of 4 or 5 other directors that could of (and should have) filled that slot.

I agree with you about Reitman. Sean Penn, Brad Bird, Joe Wright should have been nominated over Reitman.

I don't think ATONEMENT will sweep any technical nods.

That's nothing more than a feeling I have. Stranger things have happened. On top of that, it is certainly the most traditional choice for the older voters to make.

ELIZABETH is the frontrunner for costumes.
SWEENEY TODD is the frontrunner for art direction.
THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES is the frontrunner for cinematography.

There are no guild awards, and very little in general to back this up. That said, I would be very happy if each of these happened.

It's not nominated for either Editing or Director - which makes it nearly impossible to win best picture.

Hence, why I think No Country will ultimately win.

Ronan doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the the supporting actress category.

Tell that to (among others) Marisa Tomei, Anna Paquin, Juliette Binoche, Marcia Gay Harden, and so on. Truth be told, Swinton is probably the only nominee in this category who doesn't have a negative against her.

And while Julie Christie is the sure-fire frontrunner, her competition isn't Cotillard at this point - it's Ellen Page.

Good call. Updated On: 2/13/08 at 03:10 PM

Probably NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, continuing the Oscar Tradition of honoring the least interesting film among the five nominees.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is entirely adequate in almost every way, but it is completely undeserving of anything even remotely like the Oscar for Best Picture.

Just saw NO COUNTRY... last night. I didn't expect to like it but I found it fascinating. The acting was universally first-rate, especially Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem, and the writing was exceptional. I liked Juno but the Oscar traditionally favors serious drama. Hope NO COUNTRY wins.

THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES is the frontrunner for cinematography.

Over the groundbreaking work of Janusz Kaminski in "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly? Yeah, right!
