Like every other "Christian" holiday, Christmas is a mix of Christian and pagan traditions. It was put on December 25th because it's close to the winter solstice.

You are correct, Plum. It was a way of trying to convert the Pagans to Christianity (it was a great way of "promoting" Christmas by dating it next to an established holiday, as well as forcing Pagans to celebrate one or the other). According to archeological studies, Christ would have actually been born around the summer (someone has said September/October, but I've heard April). So all those nativity scenes where it's snowing outside and Mary and Joseph are cuddled in the cold....all pogwash.

In any case, one can celebrate Christmas religiously, but it has also been accepted as a civic holiday (the "festive season"), which is why everyone gets the day(s) off.

And I'm sure they were that white, too, coming from the Middle East and all. re: What do Jewish people do on December 25th?

What does being Jewish have to do with whether you can go to the Caribbean during Christmas break?

My cousin is married to a Catholic man and they celebrate both, so I go there every Christmas Day. Presents, ziti, shrimp and meatballs are worth braving the traffic over the Belt to the Verrazzano. I love Italian food (am part Italian) more than Jewish food, so its a great day for me. We have a lot of fun.

When I was growing up, I always spent Easter, Christmas Eve and CHristmas Day with my best friend and her family, and she in turn spent Erev Rosh Hashanah (the night before) and Passover with us. I miss those days...she tragically passed away in her sleep three years ago, and I think of her all the time.

I'm glad I have somewhere to go on the 25th...I hate Chinese food. I know, I know...I should be kicked out of the tribe!

Depends.
If they are single, some go to the matzah ball.
If they have a hot boyfriend, maybe they stay in bed.

In all probability, Jesus was born in April or May.

Luke's Gospel tells of the shepherds "abiding their flocks by night". The only time of the year they would do that is in the springtime. That's mating season. At other times of the year they would be herded into corrals for the night. They would not need shepherds to "abide" them at that time.

The early Christians were persecuted for their beliefs and couldn't openly celebrate the birth of Jesus. They therefore switched the celebaration to coincide with the pagan feast of Saturnalia (December 21). This is why so many pagan customs like wreaths, garlands and lights became part of our Christmas celebration. The Christians adapted them and made them their own. Read the first act of Shakepeare's JULIUS CAESAR and you'll find that the Romans were decorating the streets with garlands and "scarves" (ribbons) and Caesar himself wore a laurel wreath on his head. The Christians switched the wreath to holly which gave it a resembalce to the crown of thorns Jesus wore at His Crucifixion.

also, Jesus was born in March probably but because the Romans were trying to convert the Pagans they made xmas on Dec. 25th because it is the Pagan holiday tribute to the sun and the birth of the Pagan goddess Kriesha. The xmas tree doesnt ever have to do anything with xmas its a Pagan symbol of light (hence the star at the top)
