Are the props and costumes just thrown out? I think I remember when Dance of the Vampires closed, people were selling things on Ebay that they found in the dumpster. Is that true? I would so go dumpster diving!

It depends on the show and the producers. Some things are rented and would need to be returned. Some pieces may go to individual members of the production as gifts. Sometimes everything may be packed up and shipped to be used in a replica production over seas or elsewhere in the country or for a tour. There are also some rental houses that may make an agreement to purchase items to fill out their own stock; sometimes individual pieces that they know will be in high demand, or sometimes everything so they can rent it out as a complete show package.
And yes, sometimes none of these options are on the table and none of the producers want to pay to store it all so it goes into a dumpster.
I know I rummaged through the trash of Hairspray and RENT and got some good pieces :)

Costumes usually aren't thrown out.
