What is Your Ethnicity?

Primarily Dutch, with minor English and French influence. I've traced many lines as far back as the mid-1500's, and they're ALL from that region.

"but mostly CLAN MACGREGOR, BITCH!!"

Hey! Me too! That's awesome. :)

But then it gets all diluted on my mom's side (Irish, maybe Russian, maybe English, maybe German -- really her relations just drink and tell stories. I'm quite sure they've made it all up, depending on who they're drinking with...)

Call the understudy / I can't go on tonight / I'm drinking with my buddy / I'm getting good and tight / Before they raise the curtain I'll be higher than a kite / So call the understudy I can't go on tonight

Tap, it's interesting. A lot of American Jews (myself included) who are more culturally than religiously Jewish, consider it an ethnicity. I replied with Polish, Russian and Italian for technical accuracy, but I certainly don't "identify" with being Polish or Russian...I just remember my father being able to speak both languages. I think of myself as Jewish and Italian.

That is the same thing as saying my ethnicity is Christian, which as you know, is wrong.

"Jewish and Italian"

Well, that explains a LOT!

being Jewish is not an ethnicity, it's a religion. What part of that is hard to understand?

Lemme see... English, German, French, Irish, Welsh, Tiny bit Native American thrown in there, plus some more that I can't think of. (Mom's a genealogy buff.) I don't tan well either. I burn fairly efficiently though.

Half Irish, the rest mostly Hungarian, with some English and Scottish thrown in to make sure I'm extra-white.

Father's side - Irish and something else, we think perhaps Spanish.

Mom's side - Russian/Lithuanian with a little French for good measure.

I'm a bit of a mutt.

People that meet me think I am Spanish or Italian. Updated On: 5/31/07 at 11:29 AM

I'm 95% Italian, with a tiny bit of Irish and Swedish. Mom is 100% Italian (half Sicilian, half Calabrese), and Dad is 90% Italian, with his dad 100% Italian (born in Italy) and his mom being 75% Italian, with that little bit of Irish and Swedish on one of her grandparent's side. re: What is Your Ethnicity?

Mom's side - Polish, Italian, German, & Irish.
Dad's side - Unknown, except for a bit of Native American. We assume the rest is from the English/Welsh/Scottish area, but don't know because my father's father grew up in an orphanage.

I lucked out on skin tone though. I got the Italian and Native American genes; I tan very easily and hardly ever burn.

I always thought Judaism was both an ethnicity and a religion.

It is an ethnicity Kringas, one would be surprised with the amount of Jewish people on this board that would not have slipped by.

There are ethnic Jews, I am one. There are also Jewish people that are Jewish solely based on the faith.

Ethnicity is very complicated. It's very funny reading this thread with people doing complex equations to find their heritage. I have a lot of white friends that say, "Oh I'm Italian" or "Irish." While I understand some of them are direct descendants of a people, but most have insane mixes. Most just side with their personal favorite (usually Italian and Irish). What happens when all of your grandparents are mixed and their parents were mixed?

Kringas, yes, that's what I was trying to explain. I don't know why people were worked up and saying I was wrong. Technically, yes, I am Polish, Russian and Italian. But I IDENTIFY—culturally—as Jewish and Italian. I just think of Poland and Russia as the countries my father and grandparents were born in and don't really have any cultural ties to the countries, the customs, etc. Think back to the way your parents may have described their old neighborhoods, etc. "Italian, Irish, Jewish, etc..."

I don't know why people were worked up and saying I was wrong.

They were mainly saying that because the first person to claim Jewish ethnicity on here was Cruel_Sandwich.

Maybe, Kringas, but Tap replied directly in response to my post, "That is the same thing as saying my ethnicity is Christian, which as you know, is wrong."

It's not the same thing. You can't tell someone the "right" way to identify.

That Christian business is questionable.

Amish for instance is an example of a Christian sect that is now an ethnicity. Ethnicity is obviously not static.

I think we are getting to the point in America where most people of European descent are several generations away from the "Old Country" (so to speak). So those who do know their European roots are very mixed, since it was their great-great-etc grandparents who came to America over a century ago. Just using my mother's side of my family as an example, my 2 great-grandmothers were born here and my 2 great-grandfathers came over, from Poland and Italy. No one still living knows anything farther back than that.

My father is from Venezuela, and his family are obliviously not exclusively descendents of native Mariches which are descendants of Caribs (which are descendants of...). When he comes here people call him Venezuelan, though most of his blood comes from Euro/Indo mix that speaks Spanish and practices Catholicism.

Now if he were born in the US, well he would be called "Hispanic" or "Latino" probably... But what about his Euro background? Is that negated by his dark skin?

Then you can further complicate things by marrying an ethnic Jew who was born in the Middle East is “Caucasian” by racial standards and you get me.

100% AMERICAN!

GOD BLESS AMERICA.

I am a lot of things really but my family has not been in those countries for many generations and I have never been there and probably never will so I celebrate the country in which I was born.

AMERICAN!

I wish more people celebrated their American "ethnicity" ....sad
