"You should watch 'The Shining' in an empty hotel."
Just that phrase made me shudder. I didn't get all the way through "The Shining" because I was starting to get bored with the beginning. But perhaps I should sit down and actually watch it intently one of these days. That and all the other movies mentioned here that I haven't seen yet.
Walking by the same person you've already walked by in the dairy, produce, and frozen-food sections.

Posted: 5/31/04 at 10:02pmI'm sorry, but THE SHINING is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. And I only say that because the end pisses me off like no other film. I managed a videostore for years and would hold contests on Friday nights where if anyone could give me a logical explanation of the very ending of that film, why Nicholson was in that picture on New Years Eve on that particular date, they would get 10 free rentals. For 5 years, nobody got those rentals.

'The Shining' really caters to my fear of isolation.
That and abandoned amusement parks. When I walk by an amusement park that's been closed for the season, I swear I can hear the distorted laughter of children being carried in the wind, along with the scratching of fall leaves.

Posted: 5/31/04 at 10:14pmI like the TV remake of THE SHINING with Steven Weber a lot better than the original one... I don't understand how anyone could like the original. But, every time I see Steven Weber I think back to the LA production of HAIR and what a huge "talent" he has.... Aaahhhh.... anyway, where was I? Updated On: 5/31/04 at 10:14 PM

Posted: 6/1/04 at 10:59amAbandoned or off season amusement parks ARE scary places. We shot part of Urban Legend 2 in one and it felt like we were the last survivors of some earth shattering event it was so cold & isolated.

Way back in the day, 1973, "Don't be Afraid of the Dark" with the adorable Kim Darby.

Careful. If you say 'The Shining', you'll be pounced on as a tasteless hack.

Posted: 6/1/04 at 11:43amwell, matt, i've always assumed that the date in the picture, july 4th, 1921, was relevant as being an indicator jack torrance's independence, from mortality, as he's been placed inside the labyrinth, a modern day minotaur. his presence in the photo always was, to me, an indication of the fact that he has been accepted into the history of the hotel. but it's a horror movie and you can't ascribe logic to it i mean it's about ghosts and telekinetics.

I like The Shinning, I always thought it was a good movie.
The Exorcist, Seven, Hellraiser and the original Nightmare On Elm Street are all pretty creepy.
Anything with clowns scares me, as well as abandoned amusement parks and abandoned playgrounds, especially when there are swing sets in them. I also have a thing about static on tv and test patterns, which thankfully seem not exist anymore. When I was akid they had these creepy test patterns on tv when a station wasn't airing programs.

Ooooh. Swings, and test patterns... static too.
Good imagery.
When I did my house up for halloween last year, a TV at an angle with static was one of the elements I used to begin building suspense.

Papa, I've got to tell you that in over a decade of asking that question I've never heard an explanation like that. I'm not sure if you get the free rentals yet, but it's definately something that will make me watch the movie again this week and think about!
As for CARRIE, I do love that movie. My best friend and I laugh our asses off with that one. It really is one of the funniest movies ever made in my opinion. But I know every word to it. LOVE IT.
Has anyone else here seen IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS? That scared the piss out of me.

Posted: 6/1/04 at 1:00pmI can't even be in a room with a tv that has static on it. Don't know what that's about but it scares the hell out of me.
