how nice to see so many of you mention performances from CLASSIC films. i was beginning to think that everyone here is 20 years old.

i'm the biggest GWTW/vivien leigh fan around. (hell, i live in clayton county, georgia, where scarlett lived!) but i would have to go with GARBO in CAMILLE. sheer magic!

I think that Vivian Leigh was uniquely brilliant in every role she ever played. If I had to pick one I'd pick "Streetcar"
Also, the ones that come to my mind right now are
Meryl Streep in "Sophie's Choice"
Glenn Close in "Dangerous Liaisons"
Gloria Swanson in "Sunset Boulevard"
Tom Hanks in "Philadelphia"
Harvey Fierstein in "Torch Song Trilogy"
Al Pacino in "Scarface" AND "Scent of a woman"
and I know I may get flamed for this, but I still remember how mesmerised I was, when, years ago, I saw Leonardo DiCaprrio's performance in "The Basketball Diaries".
All my choices are of course subjective.

both henry fonda and katharine hepburn in "on golden pond"
they are a perfect union. both performances are so revealing it almost frightens me.

meryl streep in "bridges of madison county". also revealing to the point of voyeurism.

anne bancroft in "night mother"

that said, i would have to agree with meryl for "sophie's choice". it just can't be topped for sheer brilliance.

other performances that i think are incredible (but, no one agrees with me) are:
michelle pfeiffer in "love field"
mel gibson in "man without a face"
