"Shop Around the Corner" was also the basis of the musical movie "In the Good Old Summertime" with Judy Garland, and the musical play "She Loves Me".

Shame on you queens out there for not pointing that out!

P.S. - "In the Good Old Summertime" also marked the film debut of two-year-old Liza Minnelli.

For the holidays, "A Christmas Carol", the 1950 Alistair Simm one.It was on AMC last night, so I suppose it will be running all month.
Also, the original "Miracle on 34th Street."
And the mention of "M" brought to mind the Richard Attenboro and Kim Stanley creeper "Seance on a Wet Afternoon." It was made in the early '60's, as I recall.

My Votes:

NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
THE AWFUL TRUTH
Cheating: ED WOOD & YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN

And it's okay, Miss Channing, those are the movies I grew up with too...I'll take my B&W upbringing over the dreck of the 80s any day.

ooohhh...I love Night of the Hunter. What a cinematic masterpiece that film is. Cheers to the person who mentioned the French Beauty and Beast film. Another stunning visual feast.

Another little known film that is kinda documentary style is "The Little Fugitve"..a 1950's movie that follows a 5 year old as he runs away to Coney Island and spends 2 days there alone.

Am I the only Lubitsch fan here? TROUBLE IN PARADISE is my all-time favorite movie.

Kay Francis, Herbert Marshall, Miriam Hopkins.

Paris. The Riviera. Art deco. Jewel thieves. Romance.

re: What's your favorite black and white movie?

Sparkling dialogue, witty innuendo, and sex.

Damnit! Another one I left out on my list....Lubitsch was a great director, and I particulary enjoyed the movie you mentioned (as we've discussed before many threads ago) and

Design for Living
Shop Around the Corner
To Be or Not to Be

I knew I'd regret doing my list...I just knew it.

In my best Miriam Hopkins imitation, I tell you I'm flattered.

Love when the dinner ends and they show each other what they've managed to steal throughout the meal! The innuendo in that scene is hot, hot, hot!!!

Picking my favorite is easy - "To Kill A Mockingbird" (obviously). But there are a massive number crowding around second place. I don't think it would be possible to even pull out a few from the crowd. Most have already been mentioned here.

Maybe it would be interesting to find out if anyone has a favorite SILENT film? I absolutely love "Wings" and I watch it just as often as any sound film I have. Does anyone here ever watch the silents?

Did I hear someone calling me? Silent movies are my world!

For a great introduction to their art form:

The Crowd
The Patsy
The Big Parade
Sherlock Jr
Show People
The Unknown
Phantom of the Opera
HunchBack of Notre Dame
City Lights

I could go on.....

you know, I watched that Passion of Joan and just couldn't get into it. I tried watching it again to make sure it wasn't just a mood thing, but no.

And you know me..I love the silents.

(and I think that was me saying to watch the Red Shoes...for a Theater movie...)

Good call, Mamie! I named "The General" earlier as part of my B&W list, but for other silents, add:
Our Hospitality - a little-known gem by Keaton in his hayday.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Nosferatu
The Phantom of the Opera
The Boat - a 2-reeler; Keaton again. As surreal as he could be with a brilliant "verbal" punch line.
