Posted: 6/10/06 at 10:04pmI could have sworn there was a thread on this, but I took a while and searched and couldn't find it. Anyways, I am coming to LA for the first time in August. I'm so excited, but don't know what to do. The only thing I know I want to do is the WB set tour. Otherwise, I'm pretty open to any ideas. Touristy stuff is fine.

go to The Grove -- it's nice and fun (3 story Barnes and Noble!)
They have Samuel French stores there (the play bookstore) thats always a fun browse...
Uhmm... If you go to Disneys California Adventure make sure to check out the ALADDIN show... it's outstanding!!!
What else? I hear hiking in LA is very nice..
LA is a great city! I've been there twice. The weather was absolutely beautiful when I went there. Santa Monica pier is fun -- the roller coaster is expensive and lame.. just a warning...
Uhh... you have to go to Hollywood and Highland (thats where the walk of fame is, etc.)
And check out to see if anything is playing at the Hollywood Bowl while you're there... it's a nice place to see out door converts and such...

Posted: 6/10/06 at 10:44pmdamn traffic was so bad today it took me three hours to get home from LA........well part of that might have been that I got on the 405 south, and I wanted the 405 north...wasn't until I got to LAX that I realizedm I'd screwed up

The grove is a really fun place to hang out, I'm there basically every weekend. If you go, then go to the Cheesecake Factory. It has good food and very good looking waiters.
Melrose, Universal Studios/City Walk, and the Santa Monica Pier are also really fun places to hang out.

There are no nice places to see out door converts where I live.

Oooh, I second Universal Studios. It's one of the best So Cal theme parks I've ever been to. CityWalk is also great, too.
GO SEE BARK!

ComedySportz improv shows are always fun.
Try checking out the House of Blues website to see what's going on there when you come.
I recommend going to Hamburger Hamlet, Miceli's (They have the best pizza ever), or Hard Rock Cafe (if that's your thing) for dining.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is going to be at the Pantages in August, so you might want to check into that.
The NBC studio tour is another tour you might want to try. It's inexpensive compared to the other tours.
There's a HUGE Virgin Records store near the Media Center Mall.
Shopping (or even just walking) around Hollywood Blvd. is a lot of fun. There are a lot of characters you can get your picture taken with. On Hollywood Blvd., there's also the El Captain Theatre. It's a beautiful theatre, and I recommend going there if there's a decent movie playing there. Also on Hollywood Blvd. is the Ripley's Believe it or Not museum and the World Records museum.
If you've got the time and want to go, drive down to Disneyland. There's a lot of things to do near Disneyland. Plus, the beach is not too far away either!
If you really want to make your trip a great experience, go down to San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, and San Diego. They are three of the most beautiful and fun cities I've been to in California. Plus, in San Diego, there's SeaWorld.
Have a great time!

There's a HUGE Virgin Records store near the Media Center Mall.
Not anymore. They closed the Burbank Megastore. When we had all the rains over a year ago the roof caved in and they elected not to reopen it.
It was actually smaller than the Megastore in West Hollywood - it just seemed bigger because it was all one story rather than split.
Instead of opening Burbank back up, they opened one on Hollywood and Highland less than year ago.

Posted: 6/11/06 at 12:08pmI was in that one a week ago.......kinda small, nothing like the one in San Fran (but of course I bought something)

I actually haven't been to Hollywood and Highland yet. That area is far too touristy for me to keep a normal level of sanity.
I do like the Sunset store a lot. The San Francisco store is very nice. Of course, they all pale in comparison Times Square - at least in regards to U.S. Megastores.
My wife used to work at the head office for Virgin so we shopped their quite a bit and were aware of the "goings on".

ask her why they closed the huge store in Frankfurt at the Hauptwache.....I was so mad they did that.......was my favorite one.
Of course I discovered gelato then too, so I didn't care.

Virgin US and Virgin UK/Europe are completely seperate entities.
Richard Branson presides over both of course, but they are run by different offices entirely.

Posted: 6/11/06 at 12:30pmah, well I was completely crushed when in 1997 I walked up to the Hauptwache to go there and it was gone.........

Yeah, I was sad to see the Burbank store go too. It was nice to have a Megastore here in the Valley.
So I feel a degree of your pain.
I prefer the atmosphere of Virgin to that of Tower - but without that employee discount I have to admit that I buy a lot less there than I used to.
