When VIBRATO attacks!

If there's one thing I hate is when a singer has a terrible vibrato. It doesn't even have to be terrible as much as its too much. I know this one girl who doesn't even sound like she's singing because its just like "uhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh!" and she's a soprano so its so shrill and birdie.

Anyone else hate that? Or is it just me?

I know how you feel...I was at an audition one time and heard this girl sing...she made me twitch!!...it was awful!!

It sound like the Phone Line connections on a computer when you sign onto AOL. All those shrill sounds... Ugh!

I agree, when B&B came to Indy last year, the woman who played belle was all vibrato. On the sustained notes it was alll vibrato, it made me wonder if she could support a tone without the vibrato. It so much better when it is a strong supported tone at first then goes to vibrato. In some cases it really doesn't bug me, I'm listening to Bernadette Peters in Into the Woods right now and its not bothering me, I guess a lot of it depends on the style.

I agree. It's much nicer having a solid note that slowly ends with a nice vibrato.

Vibrato is especially bad on those high soprano notes.

and what is even worse is when you see someone try to get there vibrato by shaking up and down...i don't mean there mouth...there whole body jumps up and down...I went to a high school play competition awhile back, and this guy started to sing and I thought he was seizing...It was so bad...I was embarassed for him!LOL:)

OMG. My friends and I were talking about this yesterday. People just don't understand. They shake their heads up and down like freaks. Or they attempt to quiver their lips to create the sound.

They try to be divas. Silly rabbits.

Hmmm. I'm listening to "Dancing Through Life" from Wicked as I'm typing this, and I notice that Norbert Leo Butz has a nice little vibrato. Doesn't bother me.

Yea i've never understod that whole quivering there lips thing...someone should really tell them it doesn't make them look good! LOL! You see it a lot in Pop Stars...but I have seen or once or twice on a Broadway stage before...

This girl I know's vibrato... Oh man. She sounds like a goat, no lie! And she just played Lucy in Jekyll and Hyde at my school.

For true "soprano-vibrato-for-effect-gone-bad" check out the OBCR of SWEENEY TODD. No offense, Sondheim fanatics (i love him too), but that poor Joanna needs to be shot. The Beadle chokes the wrong damn bird. And the electonic bird warbles Sondheim was experimenting with to accompany her don't help. BAD trend.

TxTwoStep, I agree with you whole-heartedly. It made me wish Sweeney would slit my throat. I was close to doing it myself. Oy.

I dislike overused vibrato, but the worse is when you're seeing a show, and the actress is overusing the vibrato- complete with a quivering chin going up and down. Aren't you not supposed to FORCE it? And if I'm not mistaken, vibrato doesn't come from making your mouth move violently like that...it's from inside.

It's strange seeing professional actors that do that.
