re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: When VIBRATO attacks!

Riffing is my biggest pet peeve. Every new pop singer feels the need to follow this trend and some to the extent that the original melody is completely buried in an avalanche of musical ad-libs. A little goes a long way.

I have a friend whose vibrato is so out-of-whack, his Adam's Apple bobs violently up and down when he sings. It is a MAJOR distraction, especially if he wears a bow-tie.

"And jaw vibrato is bad... it can do a lot of damage."

I remember the first time I saw Charlotte Church sing -- she was just starting out, I think she was 13. I thought she sounded lovely, but she was moving her lower jaw, and I found it very distracting. I haven't seen her perform since, so I don't know if she still does it or not. I've noticed that Whitney Houston does it too -- or she did when she starred in that remake of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella.

i used to be threatened by my wife's vibrato, but i learned that when used right it can be fun for the whole family so now i'm fond of my gal's vibrato. i...can't...resist...

re: re: re: when vibrato attacks

I missed the comment on riffing... I have to say I'm very fond of a good riffer.

Unless you're Jennifer Holiday or have a similar voice (ex. Miss Skinner) don't try it at home. But hey, I'm all for the riffing if you're physically capable of doing so. Attempting and failing can be painful to the ears, but if you're a big black girl or sing like a big black girl, then by all means, please riff! re: re: re: when vibrato attacks

And clearly it's completely inappropriate for some songs... but if it works, it's great. I'm not talking about the Mariah riffing... I'm talking about the good ole fashion, J-Ho kind of riffing... that's some good **** right there! re: re: re: when vibrato attacks

Do you know what else I hate? When people bob their heads while singing! Pigeons don't sing damn it!

Oh - I so hate terrible vibratto! It's really something that can and should be controlled. MyNameInLights - I totally agree with you about your Lucy - she could belt, but she needs some maturity and control. But some fast vibratto's aren't the worst -Carollee Carmello has quite a vibrato - but she sings with such power and emotion that you barely notice.

But, I enjoy a good riff - when used in moderation. "Lost in the Wilderness" would not be the same without Darius DeHaas AMAZING riff. But, I have to agree that Christina Aguilara and her counterparts need to just stop.

But- that is the best part about American Idol - watching all those wanna-be's try to riff.
...and your children start to leave you from the moment they are born.

Hahaha. I have annoying vibrato. It's just so...annoying.

Just to piss my friends off, when I sing, I do the whole "jaw" vibrato. Not a lot, but just to make them laugh, and make fun of some other people I know

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: when vibrato attacks

I hate getting attacked by a friend of mine for having what she calls a "Broadway vibrato". As opposed to having an "American Idol/Christina Aguliera/I sound like everyone else in the world vibrato"? I guess I do have a voice suited for musical theatre, and I take it as a gift, when she's sittin' over there busting out riffs like crazy. It's not really fair is it?

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: when vibrato attacks

I hate terrible vibrato! The thing that annoys me the most is the lower jaw and the uncontrollable shaking- it's so bad I just want to scream!!! And yes, all those new pop singers all try to imitate Christina Aguilera, and it just doesn't work- it doens't work for Christina, either, so I don't know why she even tries.

Yes, MyNameInLights, you're not the only one who gets attacked for not having a christin aguilera/american idol/i sound lke everyone else in the world vibrato. All my friends are like "you sing weird". "No," I respond, "I have a musical theater voice, and I'm sorry if you don't understand the difference between Broadway and crap."
I have my books and my poetry to protect me...

Amen BroadwayDiva! We shall be shunned from the rest of the non theatre-loving community together!

DivaMommy, Thanks for agreeing with me about our Lucy! She sings well sometimes (once in an extremely blue moon), but to top it off, she is a b**** who needs an ego deflation. Oy vey.

I wouldn't be suprised if she was one... Oh well, at least she was the man in her relationship with "Lizard Face" Gest.

BTW Seany, I actually kind of missed you. I haven't seen you post in forever. LoL
