#0When will box office numbers come out?
Posted: 11/24/05 at 10:16amWhat time do box office numbers generally come out for new releases? When will we know about RENT? Will it be longer since its T-giving weekend?

the total box office will be tallied from all days on sunday afternoon but then they will break-out the three-day gross. rent is predicted to take in around $16 million for the five day period (and about $12 million for the friday to sunday period). that should put it in second or third place, behind harry potter and (possibly) yours, mine & ours.

Yours, Mine, and Ours will NOT top RENT. It won't. My sister saw a 7:10 showing and the theatre wasn't even half filled.
I've been checking Box Office Mojo since 5am.

Both http://www.boxofficeguru.com and http://www.boxofficereport.com are usually accurate in their predictions -- Box Office Guru especially tends to get it right 90% of the time, and his updated predictions after a film has been out for a day or so are pretty much always right. The aforementioned Box Office Mojo is great as well.

from IMDb:
'Potter' and 'Rent' Fans Pack Theaters
On Wednesday, the first day of the five-day Thanksgiving holiday, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire continued to burn up the box office, raking in $14.12 million to bring its total to $133.34 million, according to Exhibitor Relations.
In second place, Sony's film version of Rent performed better than expected as it debuted with $4.97 million. It beat out three other films opening over the holiday period: Paramount's Yours, Mine & Ours, with $3.36 million; New Line's Just Friends with $2.03 million; and Lions Gates' In the Mix with $848,000.
Playbill magazine observed on its website today that with an estimated 800,000 tickets for Rent sold on Wednesday, "more people saw Rent in movie form in one day than saw Rent onstage at Broadway's 1181-seat Nederlander theatre in over a year and a half of sold-out performances."

If that 5 million for Wed holds up, doesn't that mean that we may see higher than 16 million for the weekend total?
I saw Walk the Line today - as well as Rent for the second time. WtL wasn't nearly as good as Rent, nor was the theater A)as full or B)as responsive. Of course, I'm in NJ - go to Tennessee and you're probably going to see the exact opposite...

it may well go higher, jason, but if most of the fan base saw the movie on wednesday, then box office receipts will likely fall WAY off for the remainder of the weekend.
plus, thanksgiving and black friday, while busy movie days, will likely see less admissions than wednesday. we'll find out tomorrow afternoon.

I am thinking of seeing either Walk the Line, Pride & Prejudice, or HP again tonight. I doubt that I'll see Rent again prior to the DVD release.
#5 is pretty admirable in a "family movie"/"Oscar Film" weekend.

#23re: When will box office numbers come out?
Posted: 11/27/05 at 8:53pmWith just a 40 million dollar budget, and the 18 million only being domestic for ONE weekend, I think the movie will undoubtedly be considered a hit when all is said and done (post-DVD sales as well...)

Posted: 11/27/05 at 8:59pmWell, the official budget number doesn't include the tens of millions that went into promotion. Break even will be in the $60 million+ range, which it very likely won't hit in theatres (there's WAY too much competition at the box office in the coming weeks and it'll start losing screens to new and bigger films in a week or two). It'll probably be a flop in theatres, but turn a profit after the DVD release.
