Which of the following 10 Best Picture nominees would have been on the list if there were still only five nominees?
The 10 nominees are:
AVATAR
THE BLIND SIDE
DISTRICT 9
AN EDUCATION
THE HURT LOCKER
INGLORIOUS BASTERDS
PRECIOUS
A SERIOUS MAN
UP
UP IN THE AIR
The 5 I'd suspect would have made the "short" list:
AVATAR
THE HURT LOCKER
INGLORIOUS BASTERDS
PRECIOUS
UP IN THE AIR

Posted: 2/2/10 at 9:40amBest Picture and Best Director are almost always the same. Look at the five nominees for best Director. One of those 5 will be Best Picture. District 9 for Best Picture? Are they serious? Inglorious Basterds for best Picture? Oh Puh-Lease! I am not only bored by the Oscars this year but they have become a joke. I LOVED Avatar but Best Picture? I am going to guess next year Ironman II will be in the running for Best film. Why was Star Trek not up for Best Picture or Harry Potter? I also thought Avatar would be nominated as best Animated film as well. These nominees are a pathetic joke and this coming from someone who loves the Oscars!

District 9 was one of the best reviewed movies of the year and for fans of the genre (like myself) it was pretty awesome.
Avatar was nominated for it's technical achievements and it's massive box office. It's going to usher in a whole new era of film making. It's not going to win Best Picture though.

I agree with your list. And it's pretty obvious. Just look at the Best Director nominations, plus the cumulative noms in other categories for those films.
It was a bad move to go to ten. It just taints the category. The Academy is struggling to keep the Oscars as glamorous and exciting as they used to be, so what do they do? They actually make a decision that lessens their impact. Nice!

"The Academy is struggling to keep the Oscars as glamorous and exciting as they used to be"
Was that the intent? I thought they were expanded the list to 10 so they could draw more viewers by nominating movies people actually went to see.

ErikJ972--that WOULD be keeping them as exciting and glamorous as they used to be. Viewership and general interest in the Oscars has been on a steady decline for years now.

Posted: 2/2/10 at 10:20amYeah I know it's been on the decline. Because most people think the Oscars are BORING. Because most people don't go see movies like The Hurt Locker. They go to see Transformers 2 and The Blind Side and The Hangover. Increasing the number of nominated films gave Oscar the chance to include popular movies that wouldn't normally get nominated. Now more people will have a reason to tune in and root for The Blind Side to win.

Mister Matt---Titanic was several things besides "big fat blockbuster" that Avatar is not: a period piece, a historical drama, a chick flick ... many Best Pic awards have gone to such films.
Avatar is a fantasy and sci-fi. Only one fantasy has ever won Best Picture in the history of the Academy Awards: Lord of the Rings. And a sci-fi movie has never won the top prize.

If one is being objective, that list is a pretty solid list. It's got critical faves and films that did very well while earning good reviews. I think it's terrific that An Education and District 9 can be "Best Picture Nominees" when they would not have at 5.
The Blind Side (haven't seen it yet, but based on buzz/reviews) might be the weakest link, but it made a crapload of money and was the "feel good movie of the year" ala Ghost.
I think TimesSquare's estimate is correct. And those 5 films got the most nominations.

With its reviews and reception, Avatar could easily be the first sci-fi film to win (an honor that should have gone to Star Wars).

I think that honor should have gone to Stanley for 2001: A SPACE ODDYSEY, but it wasn't even nominated (although, Stanley was, for direction.)

I think AVATAR could win, but THE HURT LOCKER seems to be the frontrunner right now. I personally would love it if INGLORIOUS BASTERDS or UP IN THE AIR won instead. I hope AVATAR doesn't win, I'd hate to see a film that doesn't have a screenplay nomination or any acting nominations to win Best Picture. I'd find that absurd, really.
The short list is pretty easy to guess. I'm with Besty, expanding the number of nominees to 10 was a terrible idea and it most certainly diminishes the importance of the awards.

I am thinking something like this:
The Hurt Locker
Inglorious Basterds
Avatar
Precious
Up or Up In The Air
I actually do not mind Avatar being nominated whether in 5/10 nominations. I do mind Up In The Air. I may be in the minority but there was nothing profound in that movie and I saw it twice just to make sure. To me it was a more subdued, less dramatic, more depressing Michael Clayton with snappy dialogue that Reitman borrowed from Diablo Cody and Christopher Buckley. Thank god for Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick.
I personally think that the Academy should have an expansion clause when they feel like they should honor more or less films. The whole reason there's ten now is to honor more films that they were unable to in the past (along with giving more films publicity).
