My money's also on Ruby Dee, but I think it could very well go to Blanchett, or Ryan, because the Academy can be unpredictable at times.

Cate Blanchett will not win.

Ronan will not win.

Amy Ryan probably won't win.

While Ruby Dee certainly has the edge at this point, she has a microscopic role in a trite and forgettable film. And don't mention Judi Dench in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE - Dence made quite the impression in her 15 minutes. Dee just doesn't have great material.

But since all the performances are worthy and each nominee has their supporters, I think that whoever wins will do so by a very small margin.

With that said, my money is on Tilda Swinton.

Who would I vote for? Let's see...

Blanchett - A very funny and thrilling technical achievement, but (after a second viewing), I feel her Jude lacks a soul and her vocal mannerisms get in the way at times. Still, it's work that I appreciate.

Dee - The best part of American Gangster, and she is FIERCE in her 5 minutes onscreen. The slap heard 'round the world.

Ronan - Truly impressive. Nails Briony's wisdom (or lack thereof?) and overcompensation for her age and inexperience.

Ryan - Overall, a broad and showy performance, with a "Hahvad Yahd" accent, but she digs deep to make this despicable character rather sympathetic. In the end, I liked her work a lot.

Swinton - Should win, no contest. She turns a potential stock villain into a full-blown character study. Loved Karen's "rehearsals", her anxiety when dealing with her superiors, the way she fumbled with her wardrobe, her final scene with Clooney, and so on. Unique, electric, inspired... All of the above.

Who WILL win? Anyone's game, although I'm leaning towards Dee, due to her SAG win.

Ronan has not a chance.

Plus, Tilda Swinton is MICHAEL CLAYTON's only chance at an Oscar. MICHAEL CLAYTON is an excellent film that was showered with nominations. It's not going to go home empty handed.

THE WINNER IS:

Actually, I'm not attached to ANY of the supporting actress nominees. For once, I feel that they are all equally deserving. I will be happy regardless of the outcome, though I would LOVE for Swinton to win.

On the Supporting Actor front, I know that Javier Bardem will win - but I don't think he deserves it. Casey Affleck would get my vote, though Hal Holbrook is equally deserving.

I enjoyed Swinton's performance, but at times it was a bit over the top and calculated. I almost wish the film had not started with her melt down.

I feel the same about Wilkinson's role. Didn't you want to see him BEFORE he went bonkers? He was mad from beginning to end.
PEACE.

Bardem was great (it can't be easy to perfectly embody an enigma), but he's not my choice, either. I can't fully get behind Affleck because he is clearly a lead role, but I LOVE his performance.

Holbrook, on the other hand, comes onto the scene for 15 minutes and elevates the movie to a whole other level. Masterful.

I thought Ruby Dee should have won for her non-nominated role in A Raisin in the Sun back in 1961.

I just don't understand how she didn't at LEAST get a nomination. She was phenomenal. That said, Rita Moreno is one of my favorite winners EVER in that category.

"Which contains very little of value. Most of it is tv with such "impressive" credits as The Guiding Light and Touched by an Angel. "

You mean crap like:

"THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD"
"HAVING OUR SAY"
"JUNGLE FEVER"
"DO THE RIGHT THING"
"LINCOLN"
"TO BE YOUNG, GIFTED AND BLACK"
"I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS"
"RAISIN IN THE SUN"
"NO WAY OUT"
"JACKIE ROBINSON STORY"

American National Medal of the Arts

She won an ACE for that LONG DAY'S JOURNEY btw
