how old was your sister?
was she too young to drink?
#53re: Who has a gay sibling (or other relative)?
Posted: 7/4/05 at 9:42amI have the kind of sister who, even if she was too young to drink, would still have been drinking. But she was of legal age. And I am fine, she's fine, my parents are fine. Now. But it's taken ten long years to get there.

#58re: Who has a gay sibling (or other relative)?
Posted: 7/4/05 at 1:21pmSo I just sat here and went through everyone in my family to see if anyone was gay and I can't come up with one person who is actually blood related to me. I have a cousin who has an in-law who is a lesbian but as far as blood relatives to myself I don't know any at this point.

Well, I have an older cousin who has been in a relationship with another girl for about 3 years now. However, the girlfriend looks, dresses and acts like a 16-year-old boy, and my cousin has bragged about cheating on her with men. She has definite self-esteem issues, but I don't know if she's really gay or just using this poor girl.
I also have an aunt that some in the family have always suspected might a lesbian, despite the fact that she's married with grown children.

it's funny. you would think that having a gay uncle would have helped me come out to my family but, if anything, it may have delayed me coming out. i didn't realize my uncle was gay for a long, long time (and he was my confirmation sponsor and brought his boyfriend to the ceremony!! yes, i am that dense).
he never brought a date to christmas eve and no one ever acknowledged that he was gay. so i think i kinda learned that it was a "dirty little secret" that no one was supposed to talk about...
my mom (her bro is the gay one) asked him if she should ask me if i was gay (before i came out) and he told her to "leave me alone." i'm not really sure what he meant by that but my mom decided to trust him and let me come out to her when i was ready. maybe that is what he meant, i don't know.
the funny thing is, now that i am out. i have absolutely nothing in common with my uncle and do not consider him to be a very good person. i would have thought we would have "connected" on another level but it has not happened.
i do think that my coming out and bringing my respective boyfriends to weddings, xmas, etc. did help my younger, lesbian cousin to feel safe and accepted in coming out to the family. i'm surprised that my male cousin has not followed suit but i know how hard it is and that it is an individual decision when you are ready...

I think I had a gay brother, but not sure.
EXPLANATION: I had an older brother (5 years my senior) who was killed in a car wreck Christmas of 1977. He was the "perfect one": popular, athletic, smart, etc. Also an alcoholic. He was 21, I was 16 when it happened.
In the years hence, it's occurred to me that it was a suicide (he went off a bridge for no apparent reason -- roads were clear, no traffic, etc.) Things that were said to me by him have taken on a new resonance. Despite his outward rebellion, he put great pressure on himself to be successful, to be a "man's man", to be popular (above all else). Had he realized that he was gay, and couldn't deal with it -- especially because he had realized earlier that I was a little 'mo, and he felt pressure to not double-whammy my parents with two gay sons? I dunno.
Now, at the wise old age of 43 (44 next Monday), I really think issues about his sexuality had something to do with his death. I can't wait to talk to him about it...which I truly think I'll be able to, some day in the future.
SIDEBAR: The other thing that's somewhat odd about this situation is that I'm older than my older brother. Know what I mean? He died at 21, and I passed 21 years ago. All the anger that I felt at him for doing something so stupid -- whether the wreck was an accident or not -- dissipates at times, because he was a stupid 21 year old kid. And then at other times -- even after all these years -- I get pissed off at him all over again. It's a bit like being frozen in time.

rlb, your life reads like a Tennesse Williams play and that may be one of the most unflinchingly honest posts I've read on here for a very very long time. Oh, and happy early birthday

I have a gay cousin. I also have a HUGE family but it's not very welcoming to anything outside the "norm" so I suspect there's a few more lurking about.
