There is a song in BELLS ARE RINGING, "Drop That Name."

Ella Peterson is taken to an party on "New York's smart East Side." The guests all drop names making Ella feel abit out of place. So at the climax of the song she stops them dead when she says she's been shopping with "Mary and Ethel."

"Mary Martin?"
"And Ethel Merman"

Ask two guests.

"Mary Schwartz and Ethel Hotchkiss," replies Ella.

The original "Drop That Name" was so celebrity-timely when BELLS ARE RINGING opened on Broadway in 1956 that Comden and Green had to UPDATE song for 1960 film version.

For example, "Debbie and Eddie" [1956] became "Lizzie and Eddie" [1960].

That is funny, Mary_Ethel! Have you ever seen the pic of Eddie between Liz and Debbie (before the scandal, obviously)? It looks like he's standing between the most beautiful America's Sweetheart-type and the most beautiful exotic-type you could ever imagine. And he had BOTH of them. And screwed it up with both of them...

Mary-Ethel is good people from good stock! it's refreshing and inspiring to be reminded that musicals existed and were in fact BETTER before the Rent Common Era that kicked off this Wicklyn Dark Age. what is needed in musical theatre is a renaissance. perhaps a sexy renaissance.

My favorite picture of the Eddie/Debbie/Liz scandal was in LOOK MAGAZINE. Debbie was "hamming it up" while in Spain for location shooting while her heart was probably breaking.

Yeah, that Eddie Fisher knew a lot about making relationships work.
